Behind The Oilers Fighting Their Way To Victory

EDMONTON -- They don't stop coming, and they don't stop coming.

That Smashmouth lyric from their hit "Allstar" must be playing on a loop in the minds of the Edmonton Oilers coaching staff. Penalties against the home team were plentiful and (in the case of Corey Perry's slashing penalty) questionable.

It seems like the same chorus is playing on a different song. The Oilers are stuck and struggling to break free.

Penalties Take Center Stage

If you couldn't get enough called-back goals from the game against the Calgary Flames, then you must have loved this game.

Kicking things off around five minutes in was the long-debated Matvei Michkov goal. The Russian rookie made his presence felt early by sneaking the puck past Stuart Skinner's pad.

The Oilers challenged the goal, as it looked like Michkov pushed Skinner's pad to help secure a goal. Unfortunately for Oil Country, the challenge failed, and the team was now down 1-0, with another powerplay awarded to the visiting team.

Signs Of Life

Adam Henrique and Connor Brown consistently created chances for the Oilers tonight. They were rewarded with goals in the 4-3 overtime victory.

On the other hand, Troy Stecher perhaps singlehandedly brought the Oilers to life.

Unfortunately, Sean Couturier ran over Skinner behind the Oilers net, but Stecher was there to ensure he answered the bell. The two went toe-to-toe for a few minutes before the referees decided they had seen enough.

Corey Perry followed suit by chucking knuckles with Joel Farabee. After the two fights, Rogers Place was lively, and the Oilers had a pep in their step.

Odds And Ends

-After Perry went to the penalty box for his fight against Joel Farabee, Darnell Nurse came over to give him a fist bump. Good on Perry and Stecher for injecting life into a team lacking it.

-Sharp lip-readers will have caught Stecher saying, "I had to," when he was in the penalty box for fighting Couturier. Good on Stecher for sticking up for a teammate and injecting some life into his team.

-Leon Draisaitl missed a few shifts in the third period. No doubt, that was because of the undisciplined crosscheck penalty he incurred at the end of the middle frame.

-The Oilers travel to Nashville tomorrow to face the Predators on Thursday night.
