'Beamer Ball' strikes as new scholarship athlete Mo Brown blocks punt for South Carolina vs LSU

South Carolina football is cooking in the first half of its SEC home opener against No. 17 in all facets.

And the Gamecocks' dominance even included showing off Beamer Ball, or special teams for those not familiar with South Carolina's program under Shane Beamer, to the national audience.

After getting a stop in the second quarter against the Tigers, the Gamecocks were set to receive a punt from LSU punter Peyton Todd back on their side of the field. However, those plans were blocked as sophomore tight end Mo Brown jumped over LSU's coverage and got his hand on the ball to deflect it into the hands of one of his teammates.

As noted by ESPN's broadcast, Brown's blocked punt is the 11th blocked punt for South Carolina under Beamer, which is the most in the FBS.

South Carolina would then go on to score a touchdown on a 10-yard carry from star running back Raheim Sanders, which put the Gamecocks up 17-0 in the first half. LSU would respond with a touchdown of its own on the following drive to make the score 17-7 at Williams-Brice Stadium.

To make this play by Brown even sweeter, Beamer announced earlier this week following one of South Carolina's practices that the 6-foot-3 tight end was elevated to a scholarship player.

If South Carolina is able to hold the momentum — and more importantly the lead — it would mark the Gamecocks' first ranked win under Beamer since 2022 when they defeated No. 8 Clemson on Nov. 26. A win against the Tigers would surely add to the conversation of whether the Gamecocks move into the top 25 as well.
