You knew the Terrell Owens vs. the Pro Football Hall of Fame story would have some postscript chapters.

Owens ducked out on the Hall of Fame induction weekend this year, and the Hall of Fame (and many Hall of Famers) were quite offended. The Hall of Fame practically refused to acknowledge T.O., who was the first known player to skip his own induction in Canton, Ohio. Instead, Owens gave a speech at University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Whether you were for or against Owens’ decision, the whole scenario was uncomfortable and awkward.

The awkwardness hasn’t ended. The Hall has been giving each new inductee this year his HOF ring at a game. Jerry Kramer and Brian Urlacher got theirs Week 2, Ray Lewis got his Week 3, and so on.

This week it’s Owens’ turn to get his ring, presented by the Hall of Fame president.

Terrell Owens will be presented his HOF ring at halftime Thursday

The Hall of Fame, like it had done for the rest of the 2018 inductees, announced that Owens would be getting his ring at halftime of Thursday night’s game between the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. Although Owens was a bit of an NFL nomad, he’s probably best associated with the 49ers team he started his career with.

The Hall announced that president David Baker would present Owens his ring at the game. Baker, for his part, took the high road in interviews about Owens, saying he didn’t agree with Owens’ decision to skip the ceremony but that he respected him and that Owens is welcome in Canton.

Baker is the head of the Hall of Fame, which had a contentious summer with Owens over the issue. The Hall has even floated that perhaps future inductees would be required to show up, which is ridiculous. The entire backstory will be on everyone’s mind when Baker gives Owens his ring.

Owens was upset he wasn’t a first-ballot Hall of Famer

Owens was upset he was snubbed by voters twice, and he has always had a point with that. It was ridiculous, and something that will stick with the HOF for a long time. People can decide for themselves if Owens was right to react the way he did and snub the Hall of Fame for its induction weekend.

The Hall’s announcement said Owens’ bust will be brought from Canton to Santa Clara for the halftime ceremony. Underscoring how crazy the entire story got, that presumably will be the first time Owens will see his own finished Hall of Fame bust in person.

Nothing is ever paint-by-numbers with Owens. His playing career wasn’t. His Hall of Fame induction wasn’t. And even being presented his Hall of Fame ring will be different than it was for any other player.
