The Oakland Athletics' fire sale seems to have begun, while the New York Mets' offseason overhaul is in full swing.

The A's agreed to trade All-Star starting pitcher Chris Bassitt to New York on Saturday in exchange for right-handed pitching prospects Adam Oller and J.T. Ginn, the Mets announced.

Bassitt is coming off his first career All-Star season last year at the age of 32, though he was similarly strong in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Across both seasons, he posted a 2.90 ERA in 220.1 innings with 214 strikeouts, a 3.41 FIP, a 1.085 WHIP and 17-6 record.

With only one year of team control left, Bassitt is a short-term rental for the Mets, but this offseason has been all about pushing the Mets toward a division title after finishing an embarrassing 77-85 in 2021. Before the lockout, the Mets signed former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer on a record-breaking three-year, $130 million contract, as well as veterans Starling Marte, Mark Canha and Eduardo Escobar on deals worth a combined $124.5 million.

The additions of Scherzer and Bassitt figure to create a competitive rotation with Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker and Carlos Carrasco already on board, though age and injuries are a concern throughout that group.

The Athletics have much more to trade

The trade of Bassitt is the first step in what many believe will be a full teardown for the Athletics' current roster.

As things currently stand with Oakland, the perpetually low-budget franchise missed the playoffs last year with an 86-76 record, has one of the worst farm systems in MLB and has nearly all of its best players set to hit free agency in the next two years. That includes names like Platinum Glove-winning third baseman Matt Chapman, All-Star first baseman Matt Olson, starting pitcher Sean Manaea and starting pitcher Frankie Montas.

Chapman and Olson in particular have seen trade speculation since the lockout ended, and are natural next steps if the A's go for the full rebuild.

For a single season of Bassitt, the A's at least managed to get a high-upside prospect in Ginn and an arm who could make his MLB debut this year in Oller.

The Mets selected Ginn, once considered a top 10 talent, 52nd overall in the 2020 MLB draft and signed him to an over-slot deal. He sustained a torn UCL in college and required Tommy John surgery, but posted encouraging results in his first year of minor-league action last season. MLB Pipeline had him as the Mets' No. 5 prospect.

The 27-year-old Oller posted a 2.45 ERA in eight starts in his first Triple-A stint last year, and figures to compete for a rotation spot in spring training once he reports to the A's.
