The United States Women’s National Team drew 0-0 with Colombia Thursday at America First Field in Sandy.

Former BYU Cougar Ashley Hatch almost put the U.S. on the board with a shot that was blocked by Colombian goalkeeper Natalia Giraldo in the 74th minute.

Hatch didn’t start the game but entered as a substitute for Alex Morgan in the 67th minute, eliciting loud cheers from her college home crowd.

Hatch’s strike earned praise from interim head coach Twila Kilgore after the game.

“She obviously created a quite a bit of a seam 3 threat, especially when we had success in wide progressions,” Kilgore said. “I thought she did a really good job, and I would have loved a few more opportunities like that because I’m sure she would have finished one.”

The U.S. had a slow start offensively, and most of the team’s chances in the first half came from Alex Morgan.

In the 25th minute, Morgan’s first shot went right into Giraldo’s hands.

The U.S.’ closest chance to score in the first half came in the final minute when Colombia’s Ivonne Chacón fouled Morgan.

Morgan took the penalty kick but the ball bounced off the right goalpost, and her rebound shot sailed over the goal. She had missed a penalty against Vietnam in this summer’s World Cup.

Despite the missed kick, Kilgore told reporters that she still trusts Morgan to handle penalties.

“I trust Alex Morgan to take penalties, and she’s not going to be satisfied with that (miss),” Kilgore said. “We’re not satisfied with that, but I trust quite a few of our players to in these moments, and when they’re called upon, they will do their best. And sometimes you make them and sometimes you miss them.”

Did Latter-day Saint Olivia Moultrie play?

Latter-day Saint teenager Olivia Moultrie did not make her first cap for the national team Thursday. She was one of four players who didn’t dress for the game.

Moultrie still has a chance to make her national team debut this month when the team plays Colombia again in San Diego Sunday.

While Moultrie didn’t earn her first cap, 18-year-old Jaedyn Shaw earned hers when she entered the 87th minute as a substitute for Lynn Williams, who also made her first cap and scored her first goal for the national team in Sandy in October 2016.

Shaw has scored six goals for her National Women’s Soccer League club, the San Diego Wave, which is the most by a teenager this season, according to a post from OptaJack on X, formerly known as Twitter.

When is the next USWNT game?

The U.S. will play Colombia again in San Diego on Sunday. The team’s next and final games of the year will be against China on Dec. 2 and Dec. 5 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Frisco, Texas.

When will the new USWNT coach be hired?

This is likely Kilgore’s last camp as interim head coach. In September, Matt Crocker, U.S. Soccer sporting director, said the new coach should be hired before the December games, according to ESPN.

National team captain and former Utah Royals FC defender Becky Sauerbrunn told reporters during a press conference Monday that she’s been given updates of when coaching candidates were flown in for interviews but she wasn’t told the candidates’ names.

“We’re getting close,” she said, “and I think that they’ve got a few candidates that they’re very excited about.”
