Army holds on in the snow to beat Navy 14-13
Army has a winning streak against Navy again.
Navy kicker Bennett Moehring’s 48-yard field goal try with no time left sailed wide left and the Black Knights beat the Midshipmen 14-13 on Saturday to score their second-straight win in the series.
Prior to 2016, Navy had won 14-straight games against Army, the longest winning streak in series history. The Black Knights snapped that streak convincingly a year ago and needed a fourth quarter touchdown — and some Navy self-destruction — to win again in 2017.
Army QB Ahmad Bradshaw’s one-yard run with 5:10 left in the game put the Black Knights up 14-13. But that was plenty of time for Navy’s offense to get in position for a game-winning field goal. Moehring had already made two field goals and an extra point in the snowy conditions.
But as Navy got close to field goal range, the Midshipmen imploded. What could have been a 40-yard field goal turned into one eight yards longer because of two false start penalties after Navy got to the Army 23.
The final false start penalty came on third and 11. On the ensuing third-and-16 play, Navy QB Malcolm Perry was stuffed for no gain, leaving Moehring out to kick a field goal that would have tied his career long.
The win gives Army its first winning streak over Navy since a stretch between 1992-96. Bradshaw had 21 carries for 94 yards and the one touchdown.
The two option-offense teams combined to throw just three passes. Yes. Three. Bradshaw was 1-1 while Navy QB Zach Abey was also 1-1. The only incompletion came from wide receiver Craig Scott, who missed an open Perry on a trick play in the first half.
