Arizona Diamondbacks storylines to watch for at MLB All-Star Game

When the best players in baseball arrive in Texas for the All-Star Game this week, it won’t be quite the Diamondbacks-filled bonanza that it was last year. Amid a breakout first half, the Diamondbacks sent four players to that game, tied for their most since 2002. Corbin Carroll, the hometown hero returning to Seattle, was among the stars of the show.

Still, there are plenty of Diamondbacks-related storylines to follow during this week’s festivities at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Can Ketel Marte live up to the moment?

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo already spoiled that Marte will be leading off for the National League on Tuesday night. Lovullo, who is managing the NL team as the reigning pennant winner, told Marte that much immediately after he was announced as the starting second baseman earlier this month.

So, how will Marte perform in the game? History suggests he should do pretty well.

Marte has always been inspired by the big moment. He hit .329 with a .914 OPS in the postseason last year. At one point, he had an MLB-record 20-game postseason hit streak.

Since the season started, Marte has not been shy about discussing the impact of that run. It has, he says, inspired him to lead Arizona back to that point. He showed up earlier than ever to spring training with an increased focus on his defense. The All-Star Game was also a key motivator for Marte after a snub last summer.

Over the past few months, he’s used all of that to fuel a dominant start to the season. His 4.7 wins above replacement, per Baseball Reference, are the second most in the NL. And his .288/.359/.506 slash line has him on pace for one of the best offensive seasons of his career.

Will we get any cool moments with Torey Lovullo?

Last season’s run to the World Series gave Lovullo and his staff an incredible opportunity this week as they coach the NL All-Stars. From home, that might not be the most exciting thing in the world. Outside of a few camera pans to the dugout, Lovullo will operate in the background Tuesday night.

But throughout his coaching career, Lovullo has been known for his relationships with players. Ahead of the NLDS last year, Mookie Betts interrupted one of Lovullo’s press conferences to share a heartwarming moment that harkened back to their days in Boston, where Lovullo was the Red Sox bench coach.

Betts, of the Dodgers, is injured this week, but we could still get some cool moments between Lovullo and players. Now in his eighth year of managing, he’s had plenty of opportunities to develop bonds with players, even those he has only known as an opponent.

Watch out for division opponents

Somewhat amazingly, the All-Star Game does not feature any former Diamondbacks. Over the past decade, the game has routinely been populated by stalwarts like Max Scherzer, J.D. Martinez and Paul Goldschmidt.

This year, a combination of injuries and underperformance has stricken the game of those familiar faces. That doesn’t mean that there are no opposing players to look out for. The National League roster is packed with division rivals.

Including those who will miss out due to injury, those players in addition to Betts are: Jurickson Profar (Padres), Fernando Tatis Jr. (Padres), Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers), Will Smith (Dodgers), Luis Arraez (Padres), Freddie Freeman (Dodgers), Ryan McMahon (Rockies), Teoscar Hernandez (Dodgers), Jackson Merrill (Padres), Heliot Ramos (Giants), Logan Webb (Giants), Robert Suarez (Padres) and Tyler Glasnow (Dodgers).

No other division has more participants than the NL West’s 15.
