Arizona Diamondbacks’ Jordan Lawlar suffers setback with hamstring injury

Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Jordan Lawlar suffered a setback in his return from a hamstring injury and will miss another six to eight weeks, manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday.

Lawlar had been playing in rehab games in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League when he reinjured his hamstring while going from first to third on a single, Lovullo said.

“A big blow to his development, a big blow to this organization’s depth,” Lovullo said. “It’s time for the next person to step up. It’s frustrating for all of us and I’m hurting for him.

"We’ve got to find a way to get him healthy, get him at-bats, get him back on the field as soon as possible.”

It extends what has been an injury-plagued stretch for Lawlar, who opened the season on the injured list after undergoing surgery on his right thumb late in spring training. He returned and played four games before suffering the hamstring injury, which at the time was described as a Grade 1 strain, the least severe.

Lawlar also missed nearly all of his debut season after undergoing shoulder surgery in 2021, then missed time in 2022 with rib and scapula injuries.

He is widely regarded as one of the better prospects in baseball. Baseball America has him ranked No. 11 in its Top 100. He is eighth on MLB.com’s list.
