It’s not the contract extension he was looking for, but it’s progress.

The Arizona Cardinals are picking up the fifth-year option on Kyler Murray’s contract, keeping the star quarterback with the franchise through the 2023 season, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday afternoon. The move was expected for quite some time.

Murray signed his initial four-year, $35.6 million deal with the Cardinals in 2019 after they took him with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. He is set to enter the final year of that deal this fall, and then the fifth-year option will kick in in 2023. He is now guaranteed nearly $30 million that season, per the report.

The two sides are still expected to work toward an extension this summer, though they reportedly haven’t made any progress on that front so far this offseason — even after Murray’s agent pushed the team to get that done. Murray scrubbed the Cardinals completely from his social media profiles after the team fell to the Los Angeles Rams in the postseason, which prompted plenty of speculation about his future. He has since brought them back, and insisted that he wants to be with the Cardinals long-term.

Murray threw for 3,787 yards and 24 touchdowns last season while throwing a career-low 10 interceptions. The two-time Pro Bowler, who was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019, has skipped voluntary workouts this summer. Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said earlier this month that there is “zero chance” Murray will be traded despite the tension surrounding the situation.

Clearly, Murray is ready for a deal to get done. When that happens, assuming it happens, remains to be seen.
