Reds' Aristides Aquino continues assault on record books, hits 13th homer in 100th plate appearance
Through 100 career plate appearances, there’s never been a slugger like Cincinnati Reds outfielder Aristides Aquino.
The 25-year-old rookie registered yet another home run milestone on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins when he knocked out his 13 home run of the year in his 100th career plate appearance.
No MLB player has ever had that many home runs in his first 100 plate appearances.
In addition to now holding the record for homers through 100 career plate appearances, Aquino is also the proud owner of records for the fastest player to 10 home runs and most homers through 12 games.
Pretty good for a guy who Baseball America ranked as just the 20th best prospect in the Reds’ system and only got to the majors due to the void left by the Yasiel Puig trade.
Can Aristides Aquino keep it going?
In truth, Aquino has fallen off a bit since his scorching start. Even with Wednesday’s homer, he still has only two homers in his last 10 games. However, he’s still hit well enough to total a .322/.390/.800 slash line through Wednesday’s game, and even a dramatic fall from that is still a quality MLB player.
Aquino probably isn’t going to continue being the most prolific home run hitter in MLB history, and that’s OK.
When you’re in the position of the rebuilding Reds, you need some good breaks to re-enter the upper tier of MLB. Trades have to go your way, free agents have to believe in what you’re building and, above all, more than just your top prospects have to turn into MLB talent.
Aquino is certainly looking like an example of the latter so far.
