The United States got off to a sluggish start against Chile in their second match of the Women’s World Cup on Sunday. They didn’t even score their first goal until the 11th minute.

While the goals may be the highlight for some, the discussion lately surrounding the USWNT has been on what happens in the seconds immediately following them.

This is thanks to a rather ridiculous argument over whether or not the top team in women’s soccer is scoring too much and celebrating with the exuberance of athletes dominating on their sport’s biggest stage. In their tournament-opening victory over Thailand, the Americans scored 13 goals and seemed to upset a whole bunch of people for having fun while doing it.

So, naturally, the USWNT responded with deliciously sarcastic golf claps and muted kudos as they threw Chile through the wheat thresher on Sunday in a 3-0 win.

Are you happy now, USWNT critics?

Check out how subdued Carli Lloyd was after scoring the game’s opening goal.

A polite little golf clap. That’s it. And if it’s meant the way some are perceiving it, this is incredibly well-played.

The second goal of the game — this one by Julie Ertz — didn’t elicit much of a celebration, either. Though, to be fair, that probably has more to do with Ertz being mobbed by her teammates before she could do anything else.

When she netted her second goal of the day (the 10th World Cup goal of her career), Lloyd let out a roar and then seemed to go on with her day like nothing had happened.

Lloyd confirmed the intent of the muted celebrations after the game, calling them a statement.

Via the Associated Press:

“I can’t take credit for it. I’m not sure if Lindsey is taking credit for it,” Lloyd said after a 3-0 victory Sunday night advanced the U.S. to the round of 16. “She had told me if we score, that’s what we’re going to do so I just went along with it after I did my little celebration But it was fun. I think it made a statement on the sideline there. It was cool.”

The UWSNT is now 2-0 with a 16-goal differential. Don’t take your eyes off this team for a second, especially after they score.
