Aqib Talib's brother Yaqub surrenders in fatal shooting at Texas youth football game
The brother of former NFL cornerback and broadcaster Aqib Talib turned himself into authorities on Monday in connection with a fatal shooting at a youth football game, according to NBC News.
The Lancaster Police Department announced on Sunday that Yaqub Salik Talib was wanted as a suspect in the shooting that took place after a reported disagreement between between a coaching staff and an officiating crew at a youth football field at Lancaster Community Park on Saturday. Per the LPD:
"Upon arrival, officers were notified of a disagreement among coaching staff and the officiating crew," the LPD release reads. "During the disagreement, the coaching staff were involved in a physical alteration and one of the individuals involved in the altercation discharged a firearm striking one adult male. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced dead."
Yaqub Talib then turned himself in voluntarily at the Dallas County Jail on Monday.
TMZ obtained video of the alleged incident showing a man arguing with an official. The situation escalated with multiple adults taking part in a brief skirmish on the field before shots are heard fired. The video briefly cuts out before showing multiple people tending to someone fallen on the field. Police didn't identify the alleged victim.
Per TMZ, Aqib Talib's attorney confirmed in a statement that Aqib was present at the scene of the shooting. Aqib was not named in the police report.
"Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life," the statement reads. "He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy."
Aqib Talib, 36, played 12 standout seasons as an NFL cornerback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams. He made five Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams and won a Super Bowl with the Broncos.
After retiring from the NFL in 2020, Talib joined Fox as a game analyst. Amazon hired Talib in June to contribute to its "Thursday Night Football" coverage for the streaming platform's upcoming debut season.
