Anthony Davis says 'every part' of his defense is underappreciated

Sometimes, there is nothing more frustrating in life than being great at something yet never getting credited or acknowledged for it. That is the situation Los Angeles Lakers superstar big man Anthony Davis has dealt with for years.

His resume is already very impressive — career averages of 24.1 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots a game, nine All-Star game selections and five All-NBA and All-Defensive selections. However, he hasn't won a Defensive Player of the Year award, even though one could make an argument that he's the best overall defensive player in basketball.

Davis acknowledged that "every part" of his defensive game is underappreciated.

Davis isn't just a great shot-blocker and rim protector. He can also switch onto the perimeter and guard players who play any position, which is something few big men can effectively do.

Lakers fans may remember a sequence near the end of Game 4 of the 2023 Western Conference semifinals when Davis found himself guarding Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. With L.A. only leading by one, Davis hounded Curry and caused him to miss a perimeter shot, and after Draymond Green got the offensive rebound and got the ball back to Curry, Davis got another stop, this time on a 3-point attempt by Curry.

Perhaps after he played in a career-high 76 games last season, Davis will start to truly win over his doubters and critics this season if he remains relatively healthy.
