The 25-year-old Davis was rumored to be a popular trade candidate all season, but it wasn’t until Monday that Paul made Davis’ intent clear. Paul told ESPN Davis wants to go to a team that will win consistently.
“Anthony wants to be traded to a team that allows him the chance to win consistently and compete for a championship,” Davis’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, told ESPN. He added, “Anthony wanted to be honest and clear with his intentions and that’s the reason for informing them of this decision now. That’s in the best interests of both Anthony’s and the organization’s future.”
Prior to Monday, the Pelicans had been adamant about their desire to keep Davis.
In its release, the NBA mentioned Davis was fined for violating the collective bargaining agreement. Under NBA rules, players or their agents are not allowed to publicly make trade requests.
While that $50,000 figure looks high on the surface, it’s nothing more than a small drop in the water for Davis, who is making $25 million this season.
A number of teams have already shown interest in Davis. The Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks have all been mentioned as landing spots for Davis.
Davis has missed the team’s last four games due to a finger injury. He’s averaging a career high 29.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game.
