Andrew Luck on a comeback, Anthony Richardson and more
KAWASAKI, Japan -- Prior to a quarterback clinic at Fujitsu Stadium in Japan, former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck took time to talk about other aspects of his life and the current state of the Colts and football in general:
Comeback
Asked if, given the comeback made last season by veteran Joe Flacco, there was any chance… “You don't even have to finish the question," Luck said. "No, not in my life."
On flag football in the Olympics
Luck said he welcomes the addition of flag football to the Olympics, noting it has become an official high school sport for girls in California, where Steve Young coaches his daughters' team.
"I think it's great," he said. "I think our sport needs to continue to find ways to make it accessible to more people, for the long-term health of the sport. There's not much of a bigger platform than the Olympics, for sports in general for the world."
On balancing the violence of football with safety
Given his own history of injuries, Luck said there needs to be a balance between making the sport safer and appealing to the fans who pine for a return to the more violent days of the NFL.
“I think there's always going to be a constant tension, as there should be, between a conservatism and preserving part of what makes football football -- really any sport -- and evolving, and making the game safer," Luck said."I think we have to continue to evolve. We have to continue to use what we understand in science and medically and data to make the game safer. It's important for the athlete, it's important for the overall health of the game."
Luck on the Colts
As for his former team, Luck said he continues to follow the Colts and keeps in touch with old teammates.
"I'm a football fan. I pay attention to football -- college, NFL, and certainly I still have buddies on the Colts who I root for. (General manager) Chris Ballard is a close friend of mine. Quentin Nelson, Ryan Kelly, Braden Smith, Rigoberto Sanchez. It's always fun to root for a friend's success."
Luck on Anthony Richardson
Looking ahead, he sees great potential in last year's top draft pick Anthony Richardson, who missed much of the past season due to injury.
"I think Anthony Richardson has a great opportunity," Luck said. "I hope he stays healthy and plays and develops. The little bits I've seen of him, he's a dynamic player. He's going to keep growing, and yeah, I'm excited for their future."
