An analysis of FSU football Transfer Portal additions, according to Pro Football Focus
Florida State football and head coach Mike Norvell have again struck gold in the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Despite the Seminoles seeing a ton of talent head to the 2024 NFL Draft, they have reloaded following an undefeated regular season and won the ACC Championship for the first time since 2014.
FSU will again be a contender for the 12-team 2024 College Football Playoffs.
Here's a look at the Seminoles' additions from the transfer portal for the 2024 season, per stats from Pro Football Focus.
Marvin Jones Jr., Defensive end, - Georgia
Class: Junior
Snaps: 237
2023 stats: 12 tackles (seven solo), 4.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sacks and four quarterback hurries
PFF stats: 59.9 overall grade; 57.2 run defense grade; 73.9 tackling grade; 64.9 pass rush grade; 59.1 coverage grade
Analysis: Jones started the SEC Championship Game against Alabama, his lone start of the season. He made his presence felt in a smaller role for the Bulldogs but could step into a larger role, potentially starting opposite Patrick Payton with Jared Verse headed to the NFL Draft.
DJ Uiagalelei, Quarterback - Oregon State
Class: Redshirt senior
Snaps: 704
2023 stats: 180-of-315 passing for 2,638 yards, 21 touchdowns and 7 interceptions; 68 rushes for 219 yards, 6 touchdowns
PFF stats: 82.0 overall grade; 75.0 passing grade; 57.6 pass blocking grade; 80.9 running grade
Analysis: Uiagalelei is expected to take Jordan Travis' role as the starting quarterback and the offense could have a high ceiling with the former Clemson star. Backup Brock Glenn will likely have a chance to push Uiagalelei in the spring.
Jalen Brown, Wide receiver - LSU
Class: Redshirt freshman
Snaps: none
2023 stats: n/a
PFF stats: n/a
Analysis: Brown appeared in three games for the Tigers last season but did not play a snap, per PFF. He however was a standout with 111 receptions for 2,396 yards and 25 touchdowns at Gulliver Prep in Miami during his prep career. He has a chance to contribute in 2024.
Earl Little Jr., Defensive back - Alabama
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Snaps: 21
2023 stats: One tackle
PFF stats: 40.9 overall grade; 64.5 run defense grade; 25.5 tackling grade; 30.4 coverage grade
Analysis: Little appeared in just 11 games during his two years in Tuscaloosa. He has not shown much during his collegiate career but could carve out a larger role.
Grady Kelly, Defensive lineman - Colorado State
Class: Redshirt junior
Snaps: 536
2023 stats: 35 tackles (10 solo), 6.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks and 17 quarterback hurries
PFF stats: 72.2 overall grade; 69.2 run defense grade; 81.9 tackling grade; 69.2 pass rush grade; 62.5 coverage grade
Analysis: Kelly had a solid season with Colorado State but has a chance to show off his skill in the ACC with FSU. He's someone else who could help fill in the role for Verse, allowing FSU to rotate more players in to keep others fresh.
Jaylin Lucas, Running back - Indiana
Class: Junior
Snaps: 359
2023 stats: 67 rushes for 275 yards and two touchdowns; 34 catches for 247 yards and two TDs; 22 kickoff returns for 572 yards and TD.
PFF stats: 61.1 overall grade; 64.6 passing game grade; 8.3 pass blocking grade; 71.2 running grade
Analysis: Lucas is more likely to make an impact on special teams as a dynamic player there. But he is also a gadget player which FSU will use all over the field to exploit his speed and play-making ability.
Davonte Brown, Defensive back - Miami (FL)
Class: Redshirt senior
Snaps: 180
2023 stats: 10 tackles (nine solo) and one pass deflection
PFF stats: 57.5 overall grade; 68.6 run defense grade; 83.3 tackling grade; 64.0 pass rush grade; 53.9 coverage grade
Analysis: Brown had a down season with the Hurricanes, but has played 2,065 career snaps and was an effective player with UCF. If he returns to that form, he is someone who could play a pivotal role for the Seminoles this coming season.
Malik Benson, Wide receiver - Alabama
Class: Senior
Snaps: 350
2023 stats: 13 catches for 162 yards and one touchdown
PFF stats: 55.1 overall grade; 55.3 passing game grade; 57.5 run blocking grade
Analysis: Benson had 97 catches for 2,152 yards and 21 touchdowns at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas before transferring to Alabama. With the Crimson Tide he was a rotational player but has a chance for more playing time with FSU. He has as much upside as any player at the position.
Tomiwa Durojaiye, Defensive lineman - West Virginia
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Snaps: 270
2023 stats: 23 tackles (nine solo), 6.0 tackles-for-loss, 3.5 sacks and six quarterback hurries
PFF stats: 64.7 overall grade; 71.7 run defense grade; 70.0 tackling grade; 62.2 pass rush grade; 57.0 coverage grade
Analysis: Durojaiye was a part-time player with the Mountaineers but made a huge impact when he did take the field. He could see an expanded role with FSU and if he extrapolates his stats over more snaps, could be the next FSU star at edge.
Sione Lolohea, Defensive lineman - Oregon State
Class: Redshirt senior
Snaps: 563
2023 stats: 47 tackles (23 solo), 8.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks and 27 quarterback hurries
PFF stats: 65.4 overall grade; 69.4 run defense grade; 73.9 tackling grade; 64.9 pass rush grade; 59.1 coverage grade
Analysis: With his success in the Pac-12 last season, Lolohea could have the first opportunity to take the Verse role on defense. He has shown a great ability to get to the QB and make an impact on the pass rush.
Terrence Ferguson II, Offensive lineman - Alabama
Class: Redshirt junior
Snaps: 116
PFF stats: 61.9 overall grade; 80.9 pass blocking grade; 57.7 run blocking grade
Analysis: Ferguson had his most extensive playing time in 2023 with the Crimson Tide. He showed he can be effective in pass blocking but needs to improve in run blocking. He projects as a reserve next season.
Roydell Williams, Running back - Alabama
Class: Senior
Snaps: 313
2023 stats: 111 rushes for 560 yards and five touchdowns; 11 catches for 58 yards and TD.
PFF stats: 74.3 overall grade; 53.6 passing game grade; 44.8 pass blocking grade; 78.4 running grade
Analysis: Williams will have a chance to take over the top back duties with Trey Benson headed to the NFL. Williams needs to improve his pass blocking, but that could him a perfect split with Lawrance Toafili.
Richie Leonard IV, Offensive lineman - Florida
Class: Redshirt senior
Snaps: 775
PFF stats: 65.9 overall grade; 63.7 pass blocking grade; 66.4 run blocking grade
Analysis: Leonard started all 13 games for rival Florida in 2023 at left guard. He could compete with Keiondre Jones for the starting spot with D'Mitri Emmanuel's eligibility being exhausted after seven collegiate seasons.
Shawn Murphy, R-Fr., Linebacker - Alabama
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Snaps: 18
2023 stats: Three tackles (two solo)
PFF stats: 85.3 overall grade; 88.1 run defense grade; 79.1 tackling grade; 60.0 pass rush grade; 61.1 coverage grade
Analysis: Murphy did not play a ton during his Crimson Tide career, but with starters Tatum Bethune and Kalen DeLoach exhausting their eligibility, a path to playing time is open for the former top-100 recruit.
