Aliyah Boston, South Carolina star, selected No. 1 in 2023 WNBA Draft by Indiana Fever

There were no surprises for Aliyah Boston at the 2023 WNBA Draft on Monday. The South Carolina women's basketball star was selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever.

The 6-foot-5 forward leaves South Carolina as one of the most decorated players in program history. She won Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023 and also swept the National Player of the Year awards last season. She led the Gamecocks to three consecutive Final Four appearances, including the 2022 NCAA championship. In 2023, Boston averaged 13 points, 9.8 rebounds and two blocks per game.

Boston also holds dozens of program records, breaking career records in 2022-23 for double-doubles and rebounds that had stood since 1982. She was named SEC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and earned her fourth Lisa Leslie Center of the Year award, becoming the first player ever to win it every year of their career.

Boston joins former South Carolina teammate Destanni Henderson in Indiana. Henderson, who was the point guard on the Gamecocks' 2022 championship team, was No. 20 pick in last year's draft. In her first season with the Fever, she averaged 5.3 points and 2.5 assists in 16 minutes per game.

Indiana has finished last place in the league for the past two seasons and has not reached the playoffs since 2016. The Fever fired former coach Marianne Stanley nine games into the 2022 season and finished 5-31 overall. However, there is optimism for new coach Christie Sides, who has nine years of experience as an assistant in the WNBA.

"I think (general manager) Lin Dunn has done an exceptional job in her 14 months kind of rebuilding this roster," Women's Basketball Hall of Fame member Rebecca Lobo said Thursday. "She talked going into the draft last year how important it was to upgrade defensively and get length and shot blockers. Well, Aliyah Boston is going to make you better defensively. She's going to make you a better rebounding team. She's going to make you a better shot-blocking team."

Indiana is one of the youngest teams in the league. Just four players have more than a year of experience, which means Boston could play a major role as a rookie. The team's core includes 2022 No. 2 pick NaLyssa Smith and No. 6 pick Lexie Hull. Smith, a Baylor graduate, was a National Player of the Year finalist alongside Boston last season and Hull was a three-time All-Pac-12 selection at Stanford.

Boston will also bring much-needed size to the Fever roster. The team's tallest player is 6-10 Bernadett Hatar, but she has struggled with injuries and did not appear in any games last season. Behind Hatar, Boston will be the tallest player on the roster over Smith and Queen Egbo, who are both 6-4.
