AJ Storr, a highly sought-after college transfer, commits to join Kansas basketball

LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball continues to earn the commitments of highly sought-after talents in the transfer portal, with Wisconsin’s AJ Storr revealing Thursday he's the latest to do so.

Storr's announcement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has the Jayhawks' fan base buzzing about what's possible for the program next season. The decision would see Storr, as long as he is pulling out of NBA draft consideration, join the Jayhawks as a junior. And it is clear KU coach Bill Self beat out other high-profile programs to make it happen with the 6-foot-7 and 205-pound guard.

"With great excitement and humility, I announce my commitment to the University of Kansas Basketball program," Storr said, in part, in his post on X. "Joining the Jayhawks is a dream realized, and I'm incredibly honored for this opportunity to be a part of the tradition and culture of Kansas Basketball."

Storr spent his sophomore year in college at Wisconsin, after spending his freshman year at St. John’s. He was one of the Big East Conference’s top freshmen during the 2022-23 campaign, and followed that up by becoming one of the best in the Big Ten Conference as a sophomore. Whatever role he ends up earning at Kansas, he figures to be a key part of the Jayhawks' rotation.

Storr has started 53 of the 69 games he's played in across the first two years of his college career, with 17 starts in 33 games at St. John’s and 36 starts in 36 games at Wisconsin. Through two years he’s averaged 13 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, with a significant uptick in production as a sophomore. Although he didn’t shoot the ball as well from behind the arc at Wisconsin, as he did at St. John’s, he’s still a career 35.2% 3-point shooter who’s joining a team that needs perimeter shooting.

Storr joins Riley Kugel (Florida) and Zeke Mayo (South Dakota State) as transfer portal commits Self's added so far. What exactly the roster will look like next season for the Jayhawks is still unclear, because there are two potential returners in guard Johnny Furphy and center Hunter Dickinson who have yet to officially announce if they're starting their professional careers or not. But even if only Dickinson returns between those two, adding Storr, Kugel and Mayo to a team that would return more than just Dickinson will set Kansas up as a Big 12 Conference and national championship contender.
