Aidan Chiles among 5 captains for Michigan State football in 2024

Jonathan Smith has named five players to captain his first season as head coach at Michigan State football in 2024.

Quarterback Aidan Chiles headlines the group announced Monday evening, along with running back Nate Carter, offensive lineman Tanner Miller, linebacker Jordan Turner and defensive lineman Maverick Hansen.

Four of the five have transferred into Michigan State over the past two years, with three newcomers this year (Chiles, Miller and Turner). Hansen is the only one to solely play at MSU.

This is the first time since 2019, the final season under Mark Dantonio, that MSU football has publicly announced captains preseason. Former coach Mel Tucker did not do so.

"Proud to announce our captains for this season!" Smith wrote on X. "It’s a big time honor, as voted on by their teammates, recognizing their hard work and impact on our team!"

Chiles, a sophomore who followed Smith over from Oregon State, is the presumptive starting quarterback and has fans intrigued by his duel-threat skills.

Turner, a redshirt senior from Farmington, spent four years at Wisconsin.

Miller is a sixth-year student who spent the past five years at Oregon State.

Carter, a redshirt junior, transferred in last year from Connecticut, and ran for 798 yards and four touchdowns last season.
