Affidavit includes details on July arrest of now-former Kansas football player Joe Krause

LAWRENCE — An affidavit, obtained through Douglas County District Court records, contains details of the July arrest of now-former Kansas football player Joe Krause for allegedly committing aggravated criminal threat.

The affidavit, which is redacted in parts, states that on July 24, KU Police Department officers responded to a location related to KU in Lawrence in reference to a bomb threat. A KU Public Safety Office detective spoke with a KU Athletics deputy athletic director. It was determined that, through an anonymous messaging system called RealResponse the department uses, “messages of a self-harm and threatening nature” had been received from an anonymous account.

According to a RealResponse transcript in the affidavit, “There is a bomb at the football facilities,” was the final message received.

Previous messages referenced issues with "Mass Street Strategies," a company that works with KU athletes in the name, image and likeness (NIL) space. Messages specifically mentioned two staff members with the organization, which declined to comment when contacted by The Topeka Capital-Journal.

The athletic department provided a phone number and address for Krause, and the detective, accompanied by Lawrence Police Department officers, made contact with Krause at his residence.

The affidavit stated the Anderson Family Football Complex and other football facilities were evacuated due to the threat. Eventually an “all clear” came. Krause was arrested and transported to jail.

A charging document alleges Krause, “did unlawfully, feloniously, and with the intent to place another in fear, or to cause the evacuation, lock down or disruption in regular, ongoing activities of any building, communicate a threat to commit violence, and a public, commercial, or industrial building, place of assembly, or facility of transportation, to-wit: KU football facilities, was evacuated, locked down, or disrupted as to regular, ongoing activities as a result of the threat, a severity level 5 person felony.”

That charging document also states a potential penalty range of 31 to 136 months in prison, and/or a fine of up to $300,000 and 24 months of post-release supervision.

According to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, Krause was released after posting bail. He is no longer a member of the KU football program or a student at the university, according to a KU Athletics spokesperson. Krause, who appeared in two games in 2020 but none the last two years, most recently appeared in court Wednesday via Zoom and is scheduled to appear again Aug. 30.
