ACC votes to extend offers to three programs for expansion

The Atlantic Coast Conference is taking the next steps in expansion. Early Friday morning, the conference met to vote for expansion and will extend invites to three programs.

Pete Thamel reported the news on Friday a.m. as the college football season is underway, and the ACC is ready to invite Cal, Stanford, and SMU to the conference, pushing the total to 18. The news comes just a few weeks after they fell one vote shy of expansion with four programs, including North Carolina, voting against it.

But as time has gone on, things have changed in a hurry and momentum picked up.

The ACC presidents and chancellors met Friday morning and voted to add three schools — Stanford, Cal and SMU, sources told ESPN. It will bring the league to 18 members — 17 will play football full time in the league. The additions are in all sports and will begin in the 2024-25 school year.

Thamel reported that of the four programs, it was NC State that flipped the vote and pushed for expansion. North Carolina, Florida State, and Clemson all voted against it.
