Early in free agency, the New York Giants signed veteran Drew Lock to a one-year, $5 million deal as insurance for quarterback Daniel Jones, who is returning from a torn ACL.

Unfortunately for the Giants, that insurance policy became its own problem on Thursday night when Lock suffered a hip injury -- now described as a bone contusion -- in a 14-3 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Although general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll initially expressed optimism that Lock wouldn't miss significant time, it's now being reported that he's likely out several weeks.

With Lock sidelined, the Giants are down to two quarterbacks -- Jones and Tommy DeVito. They had previously released Nathan Rourke, who signed with the Atlanta Falcons this week.

Jones is unlikely to see significant time (if any) over the final two preseason games, and the Giants won't risk playing DeVito for eight full quarters, so a new body is needed in the quarterback room.

Here are nine players the Giants could sign to fill in for Lock until he returns.

Matt Barkley

The 33-year-old Matt Barkley spent time with the Giants during the 2023 season and has at least some level of familiarity with Brian Daboll's offense.

Like Barkley, Jacob Eason spent some time with the Giants last season and was able to pick up some of the offense. He was released by the Green Bay Packers on August 5.

A name Giants fans don't want to hear, Jake Fromm is available. He's familiar with the organization, although his time came pre-Daboll during the Joe Judge era.

Ben DiNucci

The 27-year-old Ben DiNucci led the XFL in passing in 2023 and has experience in the NFC East, having played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2020-2021.

Kellen Mond was a third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2021 NFL draft but has only very limited NFL experience. He was released by the New Orleans Saints in May.

The 25-year-old E. J. Perry has bounced around the NFL and UFL over the past two seasons. He's currently on the Michigan Panthers (UFL) roster but would likely welcome another return to the NFL.

Brian Hoyer

Veteran Brian Hoyer is currently working as a broadcaster for the New England Patriots but was on an NFL roster (Las Vegas Raiders) as recently as March of this year.

Trevor Siemian has good NFL experience and has played in East Rutherford before -- he had two stints with the New York Jets (2019, 2023).
