7 thoughts on the Bills' trade for Amari Cooper
Not to be outdone, the Buffalo Bills (4-2) swung the second of two big trades for a No. 1 receiver in the NFL world on Tuesday, acquiring Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns.
The move came soon after the New York Jets (2-4) traded for Davante Adams... and a few hours after Buffalo beat them 23-20 on "Monday Night Football."
For the Bills, adding Cooper is a clear need. But such a large acquisition has a lot of layers to look into.
With that, here are seven thoughts on the Bills' trade for Cooper:
All in again?
Post-Stefon Diggs trade, the Bills rolled out the "everybody eats" dialogue.
And that will still be true... but Cooper immediately slots in as Buffalo's No.1 playmaker on offense right away. Hopefully this has a trickle-down effect as well, it could help others on the offense produce too.
Why Cooper and not Adams
Only hours before the Bills landed Cooper, that Adams deal went down. While Adams is held in higher regard around the NFL, Cooper is still very good... but it's not exactly like Buffalo finished second in the Adams' sweepstakes. They might have never been in it.
Adams careers a high price tag. Cooper does not. He reworked his contract with the Browns last offseason and that made his salary cap hit only around $900K for the rest of the 2024 season. The Bills could afford Cooper but not Adams, it's that simple.
Beyond this season, Cooper will be a free agent. We'll worry about that then.
This experience could help
It always takes some time for a player to get comfortable with a new team in the NFL. That will be the case with Cooper, but he has experience that could help.
Originally the No. 4 overall pick at the 2015 NFL draft, Cooper started his career with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was then traded to the Dallas Cowboys... and traded again to Cleveland. Cooper knows what it's like to be traded and his trade to Dallas was mid-season, too.
One concern
While Cooper's addition is exciting... he does have six drops so far this season. That's tied for the most in the NFL.
Naturally, many will point to the quarterbacks he did and will play with. In Buffalo, Josh Allen is touted as one of the best in football. In Cleveland... that is not what anyone calls Deshaun Watson.
Doesn't look like he's slowing down
Cooper is 30 but it doesn't really look like he's slowing down. Cooper has six 1,000-yard seasons under his belt, and most importantly to note, two of those came over the last two years while with the Browns. Specifically in 2023, Cooper had a career-highs in receiving yards (1,250), yards per route (2.31) and contest catches (15) according to Pro Football Focus.
Cooper's numbers have helped him earn five Pro Bowl nods.
Cost isn't high
This deal seems like a good look for Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane. Cooper cost the Bills essentially only a third-round pick. Also involved in the deal was a swap of two late-round selections but a third rounder for a player that fills a massive hole on the roster? Not a bad grab by Beane.
Just in time?
Is the Cooper trade coming at the perfect time? It might be.
The Bills sit on top of the AFC East after hanging on to beat the Jets. Even so, it was clear for all to see what Cooper brings was exactly what Buffalo was lacking. He was needed and now the Bills could again be considered a serious Super Bowl threat.
