7 Giants on the bubble with most to gain vs. Texans
The New York Giants travel down to the Lone Star State this weekend to face the Houston Texans in Week 2 of the NFL preseason.
The Giants will play some starters but most of the snaps will be handled by the backups, many of whom are fighting for a roster spot.
Here are seven Giants believed to be "on the bubble" who have the most to gain in this game.
OL Jake Kubas
How many offensive linemen with the Giants carry into the season? Whatever the final number, spots are limited and there is fierce competition ongoing. Rookie Jake Kubas has impressed the Giants since they were on hand at his pro day, and he's climbed his way up to the second team in practice. He's technically sound and routinely stands out but his current trajectory may be the practice squad. However, with each quality showing, Kubas becomes more difficult to cut.
DL Elijah Chatman
Elijah Chatman, an undrafted rookie free agent walk-on out of SMU this spring, has been one of the big surprises in training camp thus far. He played well against Detroit last week, leading the Giants in quarterback pressures. Another big outing will make him harder to cut come the roster deadline.
LB Ovie Oghoufo
Ovie Oghoufo played well against Detroit, racking up four stops and batting down a fourth-down pass in the red zone. He probably won't get as many reps in this week's game unless Boogie Basham is limited. The former LSU standout is clearly talented but needs to the reps to prove himself. He could get them in this game.
WR Isaiah Hodgins
With all the young wide receivers the Giants have in camp garnering the spotlight, Isaiah Hodgins has been flying under the radar a bit. He shouldn't be. He was targeted just twice and did not have a reception against Detroit. That is no reflection on him. He is still a viable option in the passing game but needs to make some plays here in the preseason to keep his spot on the roster safe.
LB Matthew Adams
Matthew Adams made news by being prepared early for the Giants' first padded practice and then had a productive game against Detroit last week. Adams had four total tackles in the game (three solo) and played on 46 percent of the defensive snaps. He is facing heavy competition for a roster spot from rookie Darius Muasau, Darrian Beavers, Dyontae Johnson, and Carter Coughlin.
OL Austin Schlottmann
With John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) likely to be held out again, Austin Schlottmann will be at center for a good portion of the game. Last week against Detroit, he split the snaps with Jimmy Morrissey. Greg Van Roten, who has been working out at center as well, will probably play at guard in the upcoming game versus Houston, so Schlottmann can nail down a job with a steady showing.
QB Tommy DeVito
Tommy DeVito is likely to see the majority of the action on Saturday with Drew Lock still dealing with a hip issue and Daniel Jones scheduled to see a series or two at the most. He can do himself a solid by moving the offense like he did against Detroit. Lock is the clear No. 2 at the moment, but DeVito can press the issue by continuing to progress.
