7 candidates the Tennessee Titans have requested to interview for head coach | Reports

The first seven names on the Tennessee Titans' list of candidates to replace former coach Mike Vrabel are out, a list that includes some of the hottest names on the NFL coaching carousel.

The Titans have requested virtual interviews with seven head coaching candidates, per various media reports:

NFL teams are not allowed to interview candidates in-person until the divisional round of the playoffs are completed, so all interviews between now and Jan. 22 must be conducted virtually.

A Titans spokesperson told The Tennessean the team will announce who they've conducted interviews with after the individual interviews have been completed.

Brian Callahan

Callahan, 39, has been the Bengals' offensive coordinator since 2019. He has played a key role in developing former No. 1 pick Joe Burrow into one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and helped lead the Bengals to two AFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance. The son of former Oakland Raiders coach Bill Callahan, he also has coached for the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions and the Raiders.

Burrow's injuries derailed the Bengals' offense in 2023, but they had top-10 passing attacks each of the previous two seasons.

Aaron Glenn

The Lions' defensive coordinator since 2021, Glenn played 15 years in the NFL as a cornerback before transitioning into coaching. The Lions' defenses haven't been over-the-top dominant, but the unit improved from 29th and 32nd in total defense in 2021-22 to 19th in 2023.

Glenn, 41, interviewed for vacancies with the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts last offseason and reportedly also has been requested by the Los Angeles Chargers and Washington Commanders this year.

Ben Johnson

One of the youngest coaches and hottest commodities on the tracker, Johnson, 37, has helped resurrect quarterback Jared Goff's career and turned the Lions' offense into one of the NFL's best. The Lions have finished fourth and third in total offense in Johnson's two seasons in charge, including the league's No. 2 passing offense this season. A longtime Miami Dolphins assistant who has worked with receivers, tight ends and quarterbacks at various points in his career, Johnson also has been requested for interviews by the Carolina Panthers and Chargers.

Mike Kafka

Kafka, 36, was a journeyman backup quarterback who spent time on the rosters or practice squads of seven teams from 2010 to 2015, including the Titans for a brief period in the middle of the 2015 season. Since then, he has spent time as quarterbacks coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, and for the past two seasons as offensive coordinator of the Giants. The Giants made it to the playoffs in Kafka's first season, but regressed in 2023 amid injuries across the roster.

Mike Macdonald

Macdonald, the Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator, has helmed the No. 1 defense in the NFL this season, just his second as an NFL coordinator. Before that, he spent a year as defensive coordinator at Michigan and a number of years in various roles on the Ravens' staff. A young, respected defensive mind, Macdonald, 36, reportedly has been requested by the Commanders and Panthers to interview for their vacancies.

Antonio Pierce

A Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowl linebacker during his playing days with Washington and the Giants, Pierce, 45, spent the past few months getting practical experience as an NFL head coach. The Raiders fired Josh McDaniels on Oct. 31 and made Pierce, then the linebackers coach, the interim head coach. Pierce was 5-4 as the interim, and got the Raiders to finish 8-9.

He gained head coaching experience at the high school level and was a position coach and coordinator across four years at Arizona State.

Dan Quinn

Quinn, 53, led the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2020, with two playoff berths and a Super Bowl appearance. He was fired in mid-October 2020, when the Falcons were 0-5. He also has a tremendous pedigree as a defensive coordinator, leading the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl win and designing the Dallas Cowboys' much-improved defenses the past three seasons.

Why the Tennessee Titans have a coach opening

The Titans parted ways with Vrabel on Tuesday after he was in charge of the franchise for six season. He posted a 54-45 record with three playoff appearances, two AFC South titles, one AFC Championship Game appearance and one NFL Coach of the Year award.

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement that she fired Vrabel because she wanted an organization that was aligned and collaborative from the top down, including interactions among the head coach, general manager and ownership.

There are seven NFL head coaching vacancies as of now: The Titans, Seahawks, Panthers, Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Falcons and Commanders.
