6 takeaways from Saints' Week 9 loss to the Carolina Panthers
We learned a lot about the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but little of it was good news. That's going to be the takeaway when you drop a loss to a one-win Carolina Panthers team to extend a monthslong losing streak.
But there's more at work here than just adding another one to the loss column. What did you learn on Sunday? Here are our takeaways and observations from the Saints' 23-22 loss in Charlotte:
1. Saints will need to add more wide receivers
The Saints signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling, but he shouldn’t be the Saints last addition to the receiving corps. Chris Olave suffered his second concussion of the season. Rashid Shaheed is out for season. Even when Olave returns, the receiving corps is still thin. It’s either add more talent to the wide receiver room or start using tight ends more.
2. Chris Olave may miss multiple weeks
This is the second concussion Olave has suffered in the span of a month. He wasn't able to walk off after this play. Olave was carted off and taken to the hospital. He was able to move his extremities and return to the stadium later. Even with that good news, this is nearly back-to-back concussions. This looked much worse and it wouldn't be surprising to see him miss multiple weeks due to this injury.
3. Early red zone woes cost Saints in the long run
New Orleans was able to drive down the field at the beginning of the game but settled for field goals on both of those possessions. At the end of the game, either of those possessions ending in a touchdown would have swayed the result in the Saints' favor. The Saints opting to throw the ball more inside the 20-yard line when running got them down to that point was a questionable decision.
4. The Alvin Kamara extension was well worth it
Alvin Kamara was absolutely outstanding in this game, with 29 rushes for 155 yards (5.3 yards per carry) as well as 6 receptions for 60 yards on 9 targets. He led the team in both of those categories, and he ultimately had one of the few high-quality performances for the Saints in this game, maybe even this year. His extension recently was well worth the money, as he has only improved in recent weeks and is an extremely special talent.
5. Derek Carr was not ready, nor was he the savior
One of the few points Dennis Allen and this staff could fall back on was the, "we don't have our quarterback" trope while Derek Carr was injured. Now he is back, and he was most definitely not at full strength, yet he struggled immensely. Part of that falls on Carr, and part of it falls on a lack of talent around him as well. Regardless, he was not the savior to catapult the Saints over their division rival Panthers.
6. The missed tackle issue has not been resolved
The New Orleans Saints missed tackle issue has been plaguing them for multiple weeks now, and it reared its ugly head late in this game as well. Many of the explosive plays for the Panthers came on plays where the Saints' defense was missing one or multiple tackles. The injuries at the cornerback position most certainly did not help, but it was not just them having trouble following through on tackles.
