5 things to know about new Missouri football DC Corey Batoon

There’s a new defensive coordinator in Columbia, Missouri.

Corey Batoon was hired as Missouri football’s next defensive play caller in January, replacing Blake Baker, who left for the same role at LSU this offseason.

Batoon is inheriting a retooled Mizzou defense that lost five players to the NFL Draft and five more starters and key role players to graduation. Missouri looks set to continue with its base 4-2-5 formation under Batoon, but the new season ought to reveal some new wrinkles.

The new assistant's first game as Missouri's new DC will be Thursday evening, when the Tigers face Murray State on Faurot Field to open the 2024 season.

How much is new Missouri football DC Corey Batoon getting paid?

Batoon will make $1 million in total compensation per year with Missouri. He has a base salary of $300,000 and earns an additional $700,000 in non-salary compensation, which requires him to make television, radio and promotional appearances on the university’s behalf.

Batoon signed a three-year contract in January 2024, meaning his current contract expires Jan. 31 2027.

The defensive coordinator also can earn performance-based incentives, including $25,000 for a SEC Championship appearance and $40,000 if Missouri earns a berth to the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Where did Corey Batoon coach before Mizzou?

Batoon has been a coach for the past 32 seasons, and most recently was the defensive coordinator at South Alabama. He is a two-time nominee for the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant in the country, with his most recent nomination coming in 2021 with the Jaguars.

Batoon was born in Honolulu, Hawai’i, which is where he attended Saint Louis School.

Batoon was a safety in college and played two years at San Diego Junior College before transferring and playing two more seasons at Long Beach State.
