5 takeaways from Falcons' stunning prime-time win over the Eagles
The Atlanta Falcons' return to prime time lived up to the hype, and then some. Trailing by six points with less than two minutes left in the game, Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins reverted back to college days at Michigan State and started slinging the ball all over the field.
Cousins capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Drake London, giving Atlanta a 22-21 lead before Jessie Bates sealed the win by intercepting Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Falcons showed plenty of resolve in Monday night's comeback, but more importantly, they avoided a potentially disastrous 0-2 start.
Atlanta's best players stepped up in the game's biggest moments, which is the reason this team is 1-1. Here are five takeaways from the Falcons' 22-21 win over the Eagles:
1. Bijan goes bananas
Robinson couldn't be stopped in the first half and finished the game with 97 rushing yards on 14 carries (6.9 yards per attempt). He added four catches for 25 yards and provided several highlight plays, including a crossover that would make Allen Iverson proud. At one point, Robinson juked an Eagles defender so badly that he fell to the ground. As predicted here at Falcons Wire, Robinson slightly outperformed Eagles running back Saquon Barkley in a battle between two of the NFL's premier rushers. Barkley finished with six fewer yards than Robinson and dropped a key third-down pass which would have sealed an Eagles victory.
2. Defense comes up big again
As previously mentioned, Barkley's drop saved the game for the Falcons, but the defense was the reason Atlanta even had a chance to come back. The team made a key fourth-down stop in the red zone to start the game and held the Eagles to just 2-of-5 in the red zone. Atlanta's safeties made plays throughout the game, including Richie Grant, who came up with a key pass deflection to save a touchdown in the first quarter. Jessie Bates' game-clinching interception capped off an incredible overall performance by the Pro Bowl defensive back. Matthew Judon had the team's only sack but you have to give the entire defense credit for containing a potent Eagles offense.
3. Cousins delivers in crunch time
In an ending that (almost) nobody predicted, Kirk Cousins overcame his prime-time demons and calmly drove the Falcons down for the go-ahead touchdown with just 35 seconds on the clock. After the game, Cousins admitted he was still rusty but felt good about leaving Philadelphia with a win.
"I still am not sharp enough," Cousins told ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters. "I didn't feel like I was sharp enough today, accurate enough I got to be better but that last drive hopefully can give us a boost going into next week. We can build on that." I was pleased with the way we finished tonight but there's so much we can be better with."
4. The Falcons outcoached the Eagles
The Falcons were heavy underdogs but won the game by being the more disciplined team on the field. Head coach Raheem Morris' first victory of the season is a great example of how the little things matter in the NFL. Philadelphia committed nine penalties to Atlanta's three on Monday night. If the Falcons had been sloppier at any number of key moments, this game could have gone sideways. Instead, the team stayed focused and executed down the stretch. That's a byproduct of preparation and Morris deserves credit for putting his team in a position to win a tough road matchup with the world watching.
5. What's next for Atlanta?
Things won't get any easier for the Falcons in Week 3. The Kansas City Chiefs come to town after benefitting from more suspicious late-game officiating on Sunday night. Despite their 2-0 record, the Chiefs have been a little bit rusty this season. Patrick Mahomes has three touchdowns and three interceptions and Travis Kelce has been a non-factor. Nonetheless, Sunday's prime-time matchup will take another herculean effort. If the Falcons can somehow win, though, this might actually be Atlanta's year. What is happening?
