5 quarterbacks the Falcons could target to replace Taylor Heinicke
On Thursday, the Atlanta Falcons officially traded quarterback Taylor Heinicke to the Los Angeles Chargers in a move that made sense for all parties. Heinicke goes to a better situation in Los Angeles, the Chargers land a quality backup for Justin Herbert, and Atlanta gets something in return for a player who wasn't going to play this season.
Now that Heinicke is out of the picture, the Falcons have an open roster spot, and adding another QB would seem like a logical move. There aren't a ton of free-agent quarterbacks available, but there are several practice squad players that Atlanta could poach for that final roster spot.
Any practice squad player can be signed to another team's active roster. Keeping this in mind, we've highlighted five potential targets for the Falcons' third quarterback spot below:
1. Michael Pratt (Buccaneers practice squad)
Pratt, a seventh-round pick in the 2024 draft, was signed to the Buccaneers practice squad after a promising preseason in Green Bay. The rookie completed 23 of 35 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception. While Pratt isn't someone you'd feel great about if he's forced to play this season, it's unlikely he would see the field in Atlanta. The former Tulane star is a good developmental option and potential third QB for the Falcons. Plus, it never hurts to poach a player from a division rival.
2. Bailey Zappe (Chiefs practice squad)
Zappe is one of the more experienced quarterbacks on this list in terms of playing in the regular season. The former Patriots QB has 2,053 career passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. New England played a version of musical chairs with Zappe and Mac Jones last season and neither quarterback is currently with the team. Zappe completed 15 of 25 passes for 137 yards in the preseason with the Patriots before the Chiefs signed him to their practice squad. If the Falcons want to add a third QB to their active roster, Zappe isn't a bad option.
3. Mike White (Bills practice squad)
Along with Zappe, Mike White is one of the more experienced players on this list. The former Jets quarterback has passed for 2,219 yards, nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions over 14 career games since being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round in 2018. The Falcons faced off against White in their preseason opener versus Miami. The Dolphins did not sign White to their 53-man roster but the division-rival Bills signed the 29-year-old to their practice squad.
4. Logan Woodside (Bengals practice squad)
Woodside spent some time in Atlanta last season, appearing in one regular season game. The former seventh-round pick played well in the preseason for the Bengals, completing 41 of 58 passes for 379 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He isn't the sexiest name on this list, but Woodside is a competent QB who can manage a game if needed. The 29-year-old is currently signed to the Bengals practice squad.
5. Tanner Mordecai (49ers practice squad)
While this one seems unlikely, it's never a bad idea to steal a quarterback from Kyle Shanahan. Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson is expected to implement an offense similar to what the 49ers run. Mordecai completed six of 10 passes for 103 yards in the preseason for San Francisco. He's never appeared in an NFL game but the former Wisconsin QB could be worth developing as a potential third-stringer behind Michael Penix Jr.
