5 big takeaways from the Steelers thrilling win over the Commanders
On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers got a statement win on the road over the Washington Commanders. It was a thriller coming down to the last play with Pittsburgh pulling off a huge win in what could have been considered an upset. Here are our takeaways from the win.
Tomlin really was right
Three games in and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin looks like a genius for benching Justin Fields and going with Russell Wilson at quarterback. I admit I was skeptical but he's made a believer out of me.
Red zone defense is a problem
If there is an area on defense to pick apart from Sunday was the red zone defense. The Commanders were in the red zone four times and scored three touchdowns. This isn't acceptable for a unit this talented.
Outplaying sloppy football
The Steelers didn't play a clean game whatsoever. Penalties, turnovers and missed plays were everywhere. But it's the team that can overcome all that and beat a good football team is that should scare the Steelers opponents.
30 points per game
The Steelers scored 28 points on Sunday and now with Wilson at quarterback, Pittsburgh is averaging 30.3 points per game. In 2018, the Steelers averaged just over 28 points per game and were No. 6 in the NFL in scoring, just to offer some perspective to what the Steelers are doing right now.
Stop complaining about the fake punt
If cornerback James Pierre catches that pass on the fake punt, head coach Mike Tomlin is a genius. I will always support the idea of being aggressive and everyone complaining needs to point to Pierre's failure to execute, not Tomlin's call.
