3 positions to keep an eye on for Kansas football’s offense as Big 12 media days near
LAWRENCE — Kansas football’s high-profile talents on offense are well-known.
There’s the trio of senior wide receivers in Quentin Skinner, Lawrence Arnold and Luke Grimm. There’s a deep room of running backs, led by senior Devin Neal and redshirt junior Daniel Hishaw Jr. Elsewhere there’s redshirt junior quarterback Jalon Daniels, senior offensive lineman Bryce Cabeldue and more.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t positions to keep an eye on this season. Considering the talent that did depart from the 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl champions, there are a few where continued development will be critical. That will allow the Jayhawks’ offense to reach its full potential.

Here are a few, with Big 12 Conference media days nearing Tuesday and Wednesday in Las Vegas:
Quarterback
Daniels is back and someone who’s considered one of the Big 12’s best at the position, when healthy at least. But he did not play full seasons as Kansas’ starter in 2022 and 2023 due to injury. And with Jason Bean now off to a professional career, that means the Jayhawks’ will be without an experienced backup who helped make the team bowl eligible the past two years.
It’ll be more important than ever for Kansas to keep Daniels healthy over the course of the season. It’ll be important, too, for redshirt freshman Cole Ballard to continue to develop as he looks to be in line to be Daniels’ lead backup. Freshman Isaiah Marshall, redshirt junior Ben Easters and redshirt sophomore Mikey Pauley are all in the room, too, but Ballard is most likely the guy head coach Lance Leipold would turn toward first if needed.
Offensive line
Kansas’ offensive line has made a lot of strides since Leipold and his staff took over ahead of the 2021 season. During the 2024 NFL draft, the Jayhawks saw the San Francisco 49ers pick up Dominick Puni in the third round. But now there’s a new offensive line coach in Daryl Agpalsa, and the likelihood of three spots along the line being occupied by guys who weren’t regular starters at those positions last season.
Of note, redshirt junior offensive lineman Logan Brown is poised to replace Puni at left tackle. There’s a competition at center to replace Mike Novitsky, who’s also embarking on a professional career. That competition at center will have an effect on who occupies the starting guard spots, with left guard open after Ar’maj Reed-Adams elected to transfer to Texas A&M.
Tight end
Mason Fairchild is off to his own professional career, so that’s a key part of the offense in recent years Kansas will have to replace at tight end. Redshirt senior DeShawn Hanika transferred in from Iowa State to help out, but suffered an injury. So, with offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Jeff Grimes new to the team, this becomes more of a position to watch.
It helps seniors Jared Casey and Trevor Kardell have returned from last season, but they’ll need to be relied upon more this year. However much Kardell develops, he’s a candidate to be a breakout player in 2024. Time will tell how much of a strength the position can be for the Jayhawks.
