'26, 27, 28!' UCF pitcher Sarah Willis' long time between pitches sparks Florida State

UCF softball ace Sarah Willis was cruising through the Florida State batting order in their Tallahassee Regional showdown.

Figuratively, that is. Literally, the at-bats were taking a while.

Willis was perfect through three innings of Saturday's NCAA softball tournament game. It's no big surprise: She was 19-3 with a 1.88 ERA and 119 strikeouts this season for the Knights. But she also likes to take her time between pitches, and that ended up sparking the Seminoles on Saturday.

Leading off the fifth inning of a 1-1 game, Michaela Edenfield was awarded ball four on a delay. It was the second time the umpire had warned Willis she was taking too long to pitch. Pinch runner Amaya Ross stole second, and as the inning wore on, fans at JoAnne Graf Stadium began counting the seconds it was taking for Willis to throw the next pitch.

Eventually, Kaley Mudge plated two runs on a grounder to first that was thrown to the backstop. Ross and Josie Muffley scored on the play, giving the Seminoles a 3-1 lead, their first of the game.

Angelina DeVoe came on in relief after that.

Shades of Giannis Antetokounmpo shooting foul shots

The fan reaction to Willis' time between pitches was reminiscent of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who takes liberty with the time limit to shoot free throws.

Maybe the two can compare notes.
