10 takeaways from the Bills' first depth chart of 2024
As is the norm, the Buffalo Bills released their game book ahead of their preseason opener against the Chicago Bears on Saturday. Including in that is the depth chart.
Considered the "unofficial" depth chart, it's still a way the team pulls back the curtain.
And when that happens, there are always things worth noting.
With that, here are 10 takeaways from the Bills' first unofficial depth chart of 2024:
Making the rookie earn it
Keon Coleman has continued to flash throughout training camp. It would be surprising to see him not with the first-team offense against the Bears after Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott announced that starters will play.
But on the depth chart, it's a tale as old as time (in Buffalo). The Bills want rookies to earn it. An example? Coleman is listed behind Mack Hollins on the depth chart at receiver. There are other cases of this throughout the depth chart.
Hollins will have his place, but Coleman is clearly ahead of him in reality.
Shavers hype looks real
The "training camp darling" of 2024 is wide receiver Tyrell Shavers. That yearly player during camp was always destined to be at the position after the turnover Buffalo has seen at that position this offseason.
Shavers' strong play has been rewarded on the depth chart. He's listed ahead of Chase Claypool as a third-stringer. His roster push continues.
Hamler's return
As a receiver, KJ Hamler has an uphill climb to the 53-man roster. However, he is going to get his chance as a return man. Hamler is listed as the top kickoff and punt returner on the initial depth chart.
Bad month to be Mike Edwards
McDermott said if Mike Edwards was not injured during spring practices, he would have been the No. 1 safety at the start of training camp. Then when camp did roll around, Edwards got hurt again, this time a hamstring issue.
His lack of time on the field is reflected on the depth chart. Damar Hamlin is the starter next to Taylor Rapp. Second-round rookie Cole Bishop is the second-string, ahead of Edwards.
Quintin at No. 3
Over the past few years, Quintin Morris has been the silent and steady No. 3 tight end behind Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox. He's being challenged by Zach Davidson this summer--But for now, it's Morris listed at the third spot.
MVS has standing
Marquez Valdes-Scantling has had an up-and-down training camp.
Some days we see a big catch. Others have drops included.
As far as the depth chart is concerned, "MVS" is listed as a second-team player. He'll probably get run with the starting offense as well, considering that position.
Von behind AJ
It's unclear why but Von Miller is listed behind AJ Epenesa on the depth chart.
Potentially it's just a sign that Miller might not play much during the exhibition season. Miller's looking to bounce back from his knee injury in 2024 and most signs at training camp have been positive.
Regardless, the Bills run a defensive line rotation during the regular season anyway.
But not the rookie treatment here...
It's not a starting spot. Just second string. However, third-round rookie DeWayne Carter is listed as the No. 2 defensive tackle behind Ed Oliver and is ahead of DeShawn Williams.
Baylon behind?
Neither were ever expected to start. Both are listed behind Terrell Bernard at linebacker. However, the Bills did list Nicholas Morrow ahead of Baylon Spector.
Even so, Morrow (groin) is injured and not expected to play against Chicago. Spector will have a good look at changing his roster standing.
Starting cornerbacks
Rasul Douglas and Christian Benford are named the starting cornerbacks for now. Former first-round pick Kaiir Elam has been pushing for playing time and the three have rotated with the first-team defense during camp... but we're still at Douglas and Benford, as far as the depth chart is concerned.
