Sultan Kebab: Authentic Turkish stall in Maxwell Food Centre with crazy generous portions, unforgettable chicken kebab

You may think that Turkish cuisine can only be found in restaurants in Singapore, but you can actually find it conveniently within Singapore’s hawker centres! While I was exploring Maxwell Food Centre, I stumbled upon Sultan Kebab and was instantly enticed by the fresh ingredients and large meat kebabs on display.

Sultan Kebab initially operated within a hawker centre in Ang Mo Kio and moved to Maxwell Food Centre in 2023. Dishes on the menu include wraps, salads, falafel, tombik, pide and more, with prices starting from S$7 for a main. Some dishes even go up to S$16, which is considerably more expensive than its neighbouring stalls.

Despite that, the prices were still significantly cheaper than that of the numerous restaurants along Arab Street. Curious about the quality of the food, I decided to order a few dishes— just 3 mains amounted to S$38!

What I tried at Sultan Kebab

I first opted for the Chicken Kebab Wrap (S$9) at Sultan Kebab. The wrap was served sliced in half, revealing the generous amount of ingredients within— I spotted chicken, cucumber, tomato and more tightly rolled in the tortilla.

The wrap had also been toasted, giving it a nice and crispy exterior.

Every bite of the Chicken Kebab Wrap consisted of plenty of flavour and texture— the chicken was super tender and juicy while the assortment of vegetables were fresh and crunchy. The yogurt spread on the tortilla had a mild tart flavour that complemented the entire wrap perfectly, and the tortilla itself held the fillings together nicely without being too thick or doughy.

Though S$9 sounds steep, this hefty wrap was worth every dollar.

Next, I ordered the Chicken Iskender Kebab (S$16) despite not knowing what it was. I watched as the owner took a piece of flatbread, cut it up into small pieces, then added chicken, tomato sauce and a dollop of yogurt on the side.

The owner scraped the chicken from the gigantic rotisserie— I was shocked at the massive portion of chicken he cut! That alone justified the dish’s hefty S$16 price.

The chicken was absolutely phenomenal— it was tender, juicy and super flavourful throughout. It was great when paired with the mildly sweet tomato sauce and tangy yogurt, and the generous portions were certainly the stand-out element of this dish.

The bread beneath the chicken got soggy pretty fast, but had been nicely flavoured by the tomato sauce poured on top. Given the portion size, this huge dish would probably be more suitable for sharing.

Finally, I decided to give the Shakshuka with Cheese (S$12) a go. The shakshuka consisted of tomato sauce, rice, cheese and eggs, and was served with pieces of flatbread for dipping.

While the previous dishes at Sultan Kebab had wow-ed me with their generous portions, the Shakshuka with Cheese did not deliver in this aspect— despite its S$12 price, the bowl it came in was pretty shallow and the portion could have been easily devoured by a single person.

The dish was very cheesy and I enjoyed how rich and acidic the tomato sauce was. when paired with the bread, it tasted very much like a saucier version of pizza. However, I was a little disappointed that the eggs within had been fully cooked— a nice runny yolk would have been perfect for dipping the bread.

Flavour-wise, the Shakshuka with Cheese delivered, but when compared to the previous 2 dishes I tried at Sultan Kebab, it paled in comparison, especially in terms of portion size.

Final thoughts

I was very impressed by the dishes at Sultan Kebab. The flavours of each dish were outstanding, and the generosity of the chicken alone justified their slightly steeper prices.

Sultan Kebab is a great substitute for expensive Turkish and Middle-Eastern restaurants— here, you can enjoy high quality dishes and huge portions at affordable prices. Of course, be sure to avoid the lunch crowd at Maxwell Food Centre if you hope to actually find a seat.
