Palantir defense chief on Middle East tensions, China

In this article:

Tensions are rising in the Middle East. US officials estimate Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday.

Palantir Head of Defense and former Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher tells Yahoo Finance, "It is imperative for us to support Israel's ongoing efforts to degrade Hezbollah and restore deterrence. Put slightly differently, Israel is actually winning right now. We just have to let them win rather than constantly trying to restrain Israel for fear of escalation. The path of deescalation lies in victory, decisively defeating the Iranian threat network in the region."

During his time in Congress, Gallagher was known for being a China hawk and was sanctioned by the country. When asked how he thinks Vice President Kamala Harris would handle China relations if she wins in November, he thinks Harris "would either be a complete continuation of the Biden administration's approach on China, or have a slightly softer approach to China. One that prioritized things like cooperation on climate change and AI regulation with China, as opposed to having a more competitive, hard-nosed approach. I think this would be a massive mistake."

When it comes to his role at Palantir (PLTR), Gallagher says the company's tech has been proven "on the battlefield" in places like Israel and Ukraine. But it's also more than that. He stresses how Palantir's programs can be used "across the Department of Defense to improve the way that the military makes decisions and ... reduce costs in all the areas that may seem less exciting than how we target bad guys, but are nonetheless critical, like logistics in general, contested logistics, basic financial management," among other uses.
