'In this Economy?': Kyla Scanlon's economic 'toolbox' for all

Writer and financial educator Kyla Scanlon joins Josh Lipton and Julie Hyman to discuss her new book, "In this Economy? How Money and Markets Really Work," which she calls a "toolbox for anyone that wants to understand the economy."

In her book, Scanlon claims to address the discourse around the "vibecession," a term she coined to describe the disconnect between the economy's health and Americans' perception of it. The writer highlights that there are structural affordability issues, or real reasons to "feel bad," from housing to childcare costs. But Scanlon claims it's a "balance," as she tries to point out the "good parts" of the economy as well.

Consumer sentiment polls continue to surprise Scanlon, but she attributes Americans' negative economic feelings to a possible "media issue." A challenge for some Americans is getting reliable news, Scanlon says, something that's exacerbated by social media engagement fueled by "doomerism." Still, Scanlon highlights that inflation "has been a pressure cooker for so long, and people are still dealing with the impact of that."
