  • The Argus Mid-Cap Model Portfolio

Small- and mid-cap stocks (SMID), despite bursts of outperformance, have underperformed large-caps year to date - as they have over the past five years. But they may be in a better position to generate market-beating returns going forward. SMID companies tend to focus on domestic markets, so their businesses could be less disrupted by the fallout from unrest in the Middle East, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, issues in China, or other geopolitical developments. As well, the prices of SMID stocks generally are lower than the prices of large-caps. SMID stocks can be risky, but despite those risks, diversified investors look to have exposure to small- and mid-caps based on the long-term performance record. We estimate that 20% of the U.S. stock market's capitalization is comprised of SMID stocks.

It's been a wild, volatile, mostly down week with stocks rotating from tech to small caps, then surprisingly back the other way. There's been much selling and segmentation in the broad market. The massive, global IT glitch was not a welcome ending to a summer Friday morning. At midday, Wall Street is all in red and trying to shake off the week and get prepped for next week - Big Tech earnings are coming and more key inflation data.

  • Domino's Delivery Partnerships and Loyalty Revamp Point Toward Durable Medium-Term Outperformance

Domino’s is a restaurant operator and franchiser with nearly 20,600 global stores across more than 90 international markets at the end of 2023. The firm generates revenue through the sales of pizza, wings, salads, sandwiches, and desserts at company-owned stores, royalty and marketing contributions from franchise-operated stores, and its network of 25 domestic (and five Canadian) dough manufacturing and supply chain facilities, which centralize purchasing, preparation, and last-mile delivery for the firm's US and Canadian restaurants. With roughly $18.3 billion in 2023 system sales, Domino’s is the largest player in the global pizza market, ahead of Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, and narrow-moat Papa John’s.
