AutoZone wants to build a sky bridge connecting its Downtown Memphis headquarters to the Downtown Mobility Center currently under construction.

The mobility center, a Downtown Memphis Commission project which is scheduled for completion this summer, will provide retail space, bike parking, ride-share pickup and drop-off lanes, scooter spaces and hundreds of parking stalls. Some of those parking stalls will be reserved for AutoZone employees who work at the company's 123 S. Front St. location.

"This sky bridge will be an enclosed and secure connection for AutoZone employees and their visitors," the company said in an application to a DMC board.

The DMC's Design Review Board approved plans for the aerial walkway Wednesday.

DMC President Paul Young said AutoZone employees would occupy about 450 parking stalls at the mobility center during the day. He said the company was leasing those spots at market rate and they would be available to the general public in the evenings and on the weekends.

The bridge, spanning Front Street, would connect level five of the parking garage with level three of AutoZone's headquarters. The application indicates the exterior of the bridge would largely be aluminum and glass.

In November, architects on the mobility center said the $40 million project was on track to open in July.
