Malaysia sales fall 2% in August

New vehicle sales in Malaysia fell 2% to 71,162 units in August 2024 from 72,844 units in the same month of last year, according to registration data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

The vehicle market this year has come up against strong year earlier data, after sales increased by 11% to a record 799,731 units in the whole of last year. Economic growth in the country accelerated to 5.9% year on year in the second quarter, up from 4.2% in the first quarter, driven by strong consumer spending. The MAA expects a much slower second half with full year sales forecast to fall by 4% to 765,000 units.

Vehicle sales in the first eight months of 2024 increased 6% to 533,301 units from 503,783 in the same period of last year, driven by an 8% rise in passenger vehicle sales to 488,277 units while commercial vehicle sales fell by 14% to 45,824 units.

Total vehicle production rose by 8% to 536,313 units year to date (YTD) compared with 497,309 units previously.

Proton global sales fell 3% to 101,489 units in the first eight months of 2024, including an estimated 1,800 exports. The Saga remained by far the company’s best selling model with deliveries up by 7% at 48,904 units; followed by the Geely based X50 compact SUV with 15,229 units; the Geely based S70 sedan with 13,755 units; and the Persona sedan with 13,116 units. The automaker is preparing to launch its first battery electric vehicle, the Geely-based e.MAS 7, by the end of the year.
Earlier this month Proton said it planned to begin CKD exports to Egypt in the fourth quarter of 2024, with 16,000 units scheduled to be shipped to local assembler Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF) in the following two years.

UMW Toyota Motor reported a 2% decline in combined Toyota and Lexus sales to 55,800 units in the first seven months of the year. Data for August has not yet been released. The company launched the new 2024 Lexus LM in May, followed by the RZ450e EV and the LBX hybrid model in July. The company began taking orders for the revamped Hilux and Fortuner models last month.

Perodua reported a 17% jump in first half sales to 169,849 driven by strong domestic demand for the Bezza and a ramp up in exports.
