Five Rochester Walgreens now slated to close in November as three added to the list

One day after Walgreens revealed it will close its store at 101 Pattonwood Drive in Irondequoit on Nov. 13, the chain confirmed it will shut down three more stores in the Rochester market:

∎ 3122 Monroe Ave., Pittsford, on Nov. 6.

∎ 565 Monroe Ave., Rochester, on Nov. 14.

∎ 1490 Lake Ave., Rochester, on Nov. 19.

This is on top of last month’s news that it will close at 792 W. Main St. on Nov 12.

The Walgreens spokesperson who provided the new information offered the same statement the company has issued about other recent Walgreens closings:

“Our retail pharmacy business is central to our go-forward business strategy. However, increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to serve our patients profitably. We’ve reached a point where the current pharmacy model is not sustainable and the challenges in our operating environment require that we approach the market differently. We are making substantial changes to our store footprint, closing stores based on profitability including these stores in Rochester which are not able cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs.

“While it is not an easy decision to close a store, we will work to minimize customer disruptions. We intend to redeploy the majority of our team members and offer our dedicated team members new roles at other locations.”

In July, Walgreens told USA Today the company was shrinking its footprint by closing underperforming locations.

However, store closings date to 2019, and the first domino fell here in November 2022, when the retailer closed at 670 Thurston Road, now a Family Dollar.

After Walgreens told the city of Rochester about its plans to close at 792 W. Main, Mayor Malik Evans penned an open letter to Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth (incidentally, a Henrietta native).

“Walgreens’ intention to continue this history of disinvestment in yet another of Rochester’s densely populated, majority-minority neighborhoods is deeply disturbing and patently outrageous, as it comes less than two years after the closure of the Walgreens store at 670 Thurston Road, an area with similar demographic and historic characteristics,” Evans wrote.

“With these closures, Walgreens will render Rochester’s entire southwest quadrant a medical desert, with residents denied full and convenient access to the lifesaving, health-preserving medications, and medical supplies found in a traditional drug store. I will remind you that minority populations like those in these neighborhoods disproportionately struggle with a myriad of healthcare challenges compounded by limited access to transportation.”

Walgreens isn’t the only big-box pharmacy that’s downsizing after a long period of expansion. CVS has closed stores, including at 1455 Lake Ave. in 2020. And last year, Rite Aid closed stores in Penfield and in the city of Rochester.
