Earnings Update: AbCellera Biologics Inc. (NASDAQ:ABCL) Just Reported And Analysts Are Trimming Their Forecasts

In this article:

Shareholders might have noticed that AbCellera Biologics Inc. (NASDAQ:ABCL) filed its second-quarter result this time last week. The early response was not positive, with shares down 9.2% to US$2.77 in the past week. Revenues fell -27% short of what the analysts had expected, coming in at US$7.3m. Statutory losses were somewhat milder than expected, coming in with a loss of US$0.13 per share. This is an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance in its report, look at what experts are forecasting for next year, and see if there has been any change to expectations for the business. So we collected the latest post-earnings statutory consensus estimates to see what could be in store for next year.

Following last week's earnings report, AbCellera Biologics' eight analysts are forecasting 2024 revenues to be US$33.1m, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Losses are expected to increase substantially, hitting US$0.59 per share. Yet prior to the latest earnings, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$42.4m and losses of US$0.57 per share in 2024. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, withthe analysts making a serious cut to their revenue outlook while also expecting losses per share to increase.

The average price target was broadly unchanged at US$14.00, perhaps implicitly signalling that the weaker earnings outlook is not expected to have a long-term impact on the valuation. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. The most optimistic AbCellera Biologics analyst has a price target of US$28.00 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$5.00. As you can see the range of estimates is wide, with the lowest valuation coming in at less than half the most bullish estimate, suggesting there are some strongly diverging views on how analysts think this business will perform. With this in mind, we wouldn't rely too heavily the consensus price target, as it is just an average and analysts clearly have some deeply divergent views on the business.

Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. From these estimates it looks as though the analysts expect the years of declining revenue to come to an end, given the flat forecast out to 2024. That would be a definite improvement, given that the past three years have seen revenue shrink 62% annually. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 6.7% per year. So it's pretty clear that, although revenues are improving, AbCellera Biologics is still expected to grow slower than the industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that the analysts increased their loss per share estimates for next year. Unfortunately, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and our data indicates underperformance compared to the wider industry. Even so, earnings per share are more important to the intrinsic value of the business. There was no real change to the consensus price target, suggesting that the intrinsic value of the business has not undergone any major changes with the latest estimates.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. We have estimates - from multiple AbCellera Biologics analysts - going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.

That said, it's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with AbCellera Biologics , and understanding this should be part of your investment process.
