The 7.7% return this week takes Pure Storage's (NYSE:PSTG) shareholders five-year gains to 198%

In this article:

While Pure Storage, Inc. (NYSE:PSTG) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 22% in the last quarter. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. In fact, the share price is 198% higher today. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

Since the stock has added US$1.2b to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

We don't think that Pure Storage's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

For the last half decade, Pure Storage can boast revenue growth at a rate of 15% per year. That's well above most pre-profit companies. So it's not entirely surprising that the share price reflected this performance by increasing at a rate of 24% per year, in that time. So it seems likely that buyers have paid attention to the strong revenue growth. To our minds that makes Pure Storage worth investigating - it may have its best days ahead.

A Different Perspective
