Zac Efron makes first red carpet appearance since addressing plastic surgery rumours
Zac Efron is making a chiseled return to the red carpet at TIFF.
The 34-year-old actor stepped onto the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet on Tuesday wearing a dark grey checked suit with a black polo shirt. The "High School Musical" actor paired his look with shiny black Oxford shoes, a dark metal ring, a silver watch and naturally coiffed hair.
Efron made an appearance at TIFF for his upcoming biographical action comedy film, "The Greatest Beer Run Ever," where he stars as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who, in November 1967, snuck into Vietnam during the height of the war.
It's the "Neighbours" and "The Greatest Showman" star's first public appearance since he addressed rumours last week that he had gotten plastic surgery. In a Men's Health interview, Efron shared some of the post-"Baywatch" hardships he endured, along with why his facial structure may look different.
The California native revealed that around four years ago, in the span of a year-and-a-half, he had torn his ACL, dislocated his shoulder, broke his wrist and threw out his back. He had also shattered his jaw while running through his house wearing socks, causing him to slip and fall into a granite fountain that knocked him out and left his chin bone "hanging off his face."
Following that injury, he explained that his masseter muscles — which help with chewing — had to compensate while he healed. While he worked with a specialist and practiced physical therapy, Efron said he took a break while he was in Australia.
"The masseters just grew," he said. "They just got really, really big."
Plastic surgery speculation first sparked in April 2021, after Efron appeared in a video promoting an Earth Day special with Bill Nye. At the time, many people — including Efron's mother — questioned whether he had cosmetic surgery, with some dubbing the viral conversation "jaw-gate."
Despite the online chatter, social media is something Efron said he avoids, something he's been practicing since he became a rising star at 17.
Efron also revealed that he struggles with agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder that involves the fear of going into crowded spaces, or sometimes leaving one's home.
"I just don't go out," the "17 Again" and "Hairspray" star remarked. "People in large groups, it triggers my agoraphobia."
Still, the actor shared one secret that has kept him powering through Hollywood as one of its top stars.
"If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do," he said, "I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work."
