When is Black Friday 2020 in Canada?

Black Friday occurs on the last Friday of November, making Friday, Nov. 27 the official start of Black Friday for both Canada and internationally.

However, the once one-day only shopping event has evolved to include the Black Friday weekend through to Monday, Nov. 30, which is known as Cyber Monday.

Many retailers are expected to push their Black Friday deals live early, on Thursday, Nov. 26 - while others, like Walmart, Amazon and Best Buy are offering Black Friday-type discounts throughout the entire month of November.

What is Black Friday?

There are many stories circulating about the origins of Black Friday as a shopping event.

The term “Black Friday” originated in 1869 when the United States entered into financial crisis due to the crash of the gold market.

However, it isn’t until the ‘50s when the term is used in the context of shopping. According to researchers, police in Philadelphia used the term to describe the “chaos” that ensued the day after Thanksgiving, when retailers in the city promoted sales ahead of the annual Army-Navy college football game.

The influx of traffic jams and crowds meant that more police were required and officers weren’t permitted to take the day off.

In the ‘60s, “Black Friday” was re-branded to entice people to shop rather than avoid the city and shopping centres due to fear of large crowds. Many retailers created fake etymology’s of the holiday, attributing the name to merchants who were previously “in the red” moving “in the black” because of the increase of sales the day after Thanksgiving.

No matter its origins, Black Friday has expanded beyond just one day of shopping to include Brown Thursday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday.
