Just in time for the start of summer, Everlane has recently released their very first pair of bike shorts. When we heard the news, we knew we had to give them a try - especially considering how divided the Yahoo Lifestyle Canada team was after testing out the original Perform Leggings earlier this year.
Like their full-length counterparts, The Perform Bike Short is made of 58 per cent recycled nylon for a figure-hugging silhouette that keeps you feeling supported.
Available in two colours and retailing for $62, Everlane advertises them as ideal for low and moderate activity - so no judgement whether you’re wearing them during an at-home yoga session or a Netflix marathon.
Now that we’ve been wearing them ourselves for the past week or so, here are our thoughts.

If you know me, you know how much of a fan I am of Everlane’s Perform Leggings, so when I heard that the brand was finally coming out with bike shorts I was naturally excited to cop a pair. And just as expected, these shorts do not disappoint. Just like the leggings, they offer an impeccable fit and a supportive high waistband with the perfect compression — pretty much checking off all the boxes for bottoms you need for a successful HIIT workout.
But what I love most about these bike shorts is their eight-inch inseam. The longer length of these shorts offers more coverage and allows for style versatility. So when I'm not breaking a sweat during a run around the neighbourhood, I can easily pair these shorts with a hoodie or a loose T-shirt for a hot weather-friendly at-home look. But my favourite way to style bike shorts is by wearing with it an oversized button-down blouse and plain white sneakers.
I typically wear between a size 24 to 25 in denim and trousers, so I opted for XXS in the Perform Bike Short. I find that they fit a lot snugger than the leggings, which offer a more second-skin feel, so I suggest going down a size in these.

To be completely honest, I was worried that I wouldn’t be that excited about these shorts after my lacklustre impression of the Perform Legging, but I think it’s safe to say that I’m a convert. I found that the things I initially didn’t like about the leggings, like the thin material and ultra-high waistband, were actually much better suited to a pair of bike shorts.
These do have the same second-skin feeling, but I felt like they were a touch heavier in the shorts than the leggings, giving the illusion of more coverage at least. As someone who isn’t a fan of highly compressive athletic wear, the cropped length also feels much less restrictive while being more flattering for my 5’3” frame than the full-length leggings were.
At $62 CAD, they are a little on the high end for bike shorts, but knowing that they’re made with recycled nylon is a big draw. Catch me wearing them all season long, since they’re the perfect complement for my summer uniform of a breezy T-shirt and Birkenstocks.

Oh, bike shorts. Like Kate, I was hesitant to try the Perform Bike Shorts since I didn’t exactly love the Perform Leggings. Based on my previous experiences with Everlane clothing, I ordered the leggings in a large (even though I’m typically a size 6/8/Medium everywhere else) because I was worried that they would be too tight around the leg and have that spillover look that isn’t exactly ideal.
When they arrived, I was happy that I sized up, since they fit perfectly at the legs, however they were a little loose around the waist- not terribly or uncomfortably loose, but there was a gap that I covered with an oversized sweatshirt.
For some reason with the Bike Shorts, I didn’t mind the barely-there feeling this time around. I felt comfortable walking my pups and lounging in them - even though this normally wouldn’t be a trend I would try on my own. Do I like them? Yes. Am I going to wear them all summer? Yes. Am I surprised that I like them? Heck yes.

Editor’s note: Please excuse my horrible photo. I’ve been living with my parents during quarantine - and they have zero full-length mirrors. This is me standing on a bathroom stool. Hello, world.
Believe it or not, these are my first pair of bike shorts. I’ve been looking to jump on board with the trend, but have yet to find the pair that’s right for me — so I was excited to try out this pair from Everlane.
Unlike some of my coworkers, I was actually a Perform Legging convert after a couple of wears — while I initially hated their ultra-lightweight feel, they soon won me over and worked their way into my regular rotation.
Like Elizabeth said, I found that I really didn’t mind the barely-there feel of these shorts. They’re lightweight while still being compressive, which is a must-have for me. They passed the bend-over test and didn’t show any pantylines, which is also a huge bonus.
The only thing I wish was a bit different, and this is totally personal preference, was that I wish they were a tad longer. As I moved around they did ride up a bit, which made them shorter than I had hoped for. If I was ordering again, I might size up from my regular size to see if that makes them stay in place a bit better.
