Venice Film Festival: Vote for the best and worst-dressed celebrities, from Angelina Jolie to Cate Blanchett
Celebrities stepped onto the red carpet in Italy for movies like "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," "Maria" and "Babygirl."
This year's Venice Film Festival kicked off earlier in the week, offering a world stage for numerous celebrities to show off their sense of style. The 81st edition of the international competition takes place from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7 in the northeastern Italy city. But which A-listers are attending the event?
From opening movie "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" starring Jenna Ortega to Lady Gaga's "Joker: Folie à Deux," there are sure to be several eye-catching red carpet moments. Ortega, 21, has already stepped out in a show-stopping custom Christian Dior gown that was a clear tribute to Lydia Deetz's famous red wedding dress in the original 1988 "Beetlejuice." Nicole Kidman, 57, also wore a casual black Bottega Veneta dress for the event.
Still, deciding on some of the best-dressed celebrities at the event won't be an easy task. Angelina Jolie, Catherine O'Hara, Jung Ho-Yeon, Winona Ryder and Cate Blanchett are just some of the stars who have looked stunning at various movie premieres since the film festival began.
On the other hand, some big names haven't brought out their best looks in Italy. Sigourney Weaver, Isabelle Huppert, Taylor Russell, Monica Bellucci and Izabel Goulart were amongst some of the worst-dressed stars seen on the red carpet so far.
Last week, Yahoo Canada readers voted Michelle Obama as the best-dressed celebrity of the week. The former first lady of the United States had stepped on-stage at the Democratic National Convention wearing a Monse sleeveless blazer and matching trousers. On the other hand, Da'Vine Joy Randolph's strapless Mugler look for the "Only Murders in the Building" Season 4 premiere was considered the worst look.
This week, looking at some of the fashion moments already seen at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, who would you consider the best-dressed celebrity? Who would you pick as the worst-dressed star? Cast your vote below, and scroll further to read more about some of the looks seen at the Italian event so far.
BEST DRESSED: Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie captured the drama and legendary essence of the character she plays in Pablo Larraín's new film, "Maria." The 49-year-old actress wore a custom stone-coloured, chiffon-draped gown by Tamara Ralph, exuding an Old Hollywood glamour renowned opera singer Maria Callas would approve of. The strapless number featured faux fur on the bodice, and Jolie wore silk chiffon gloves and a gold broach to accessorize.
WORST DRESSED: Sigourney Weaver
Sigourney Weaver went all-black for the red carpet, wearing a look created by Chanel that simply distracts from the legendary actress' natural beauty. The 74-year-old "Alien" star wore an off-the-shoulder jacket that glittered with sequins, paired with a long black skirt. But when you're accepting a major title like the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award, does it really matter what anyone else thinks?
BEST DRESSED: Catherine O'Hara
Catherine O'Hara took a risk wearing a custom Oscar de la Renta look — and it totally paid off. The 70-year-old Canadian actress looked like an exquisite evil villain wearing a black long-sleeve gown featuring a woven pattern that build up to off-the-shoulder barbed wire-style elements. The dress also featured various floral accents, and the whole look was tied together with Cartier jewelry.
WORST DRESSED: Isabelle Huppert
Isabelle Huppert looked like she just walked off the set of "The Handsmaid's Tale" in the custom red gown she wore by Balenciaga. The 71-year-old actress blended into the red carpet with the long-sleeve piece, which was paired with white gloves and silver jewelry.
BEST DRESSED: Jung Ho-yeon
Red is hard to pull off when you're matching your event's carpet, but Jung Ho-yeon stunned in a custom Louis Vuitton look that set her apart from the space — and the rest of the crowd. The 30-year-old "Squid Game" star looked immaculate in her Venice Film Festival debut, with a blazing red dress that was designed to look like thousands of micro sequins. She accessorized with black sandals, silver rings and chandelier earrings.
WORST DRESSED: Taylor Russell
Taylor Russell's Chanel gown is a getup that might've been better staying in the archives. The 30-year-old Canadian actress' outfit featured a see-through corset bodice and a cloud-like patterned mid-piece that evolved into a flowing skirt at the bottom. The "Bones and All" star accessorized with jewelry courtesy of Tiffany & Co.
BEST DRESSED: Winona Ryder
Winona Ryder was fully in her element wearing a Chanel haute couture outfit that featured blended masculine and feminine styles. The 52-year-old actress' all-black look featured a cropped blazer, vest, white buttoned shirt and a tulle skirt.
WORST DRESSED: Monica Bellucci
Monica Bellucci has turned out better looks than this Vivienne Westwood ensemble. The 59-year-old actress wore her trademark colour — black — for the event, with a custom strapless gown that featured puffed sleeves and a plunging neckline. The "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" star accessorized with a colourful Cartier necklace and a Roger Vivier clutch.
BEST DRESSED: Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett has been showing off look after look in Venice, and the Armani Privé gown she wore on the first day was extraordinary. The 55-year-old actress shined in the strapless number that showcased her hourglass figure. The metallic gold outfit was lined with crystals and accessorized with jewelry from Louis Vuitton.
WORST DRESSED: Izabel Goulart
Izabel Goulart missed the mark with a strapless Ermanno Scervino black gown that looked like a bunch of fabric tied together at the last minute. The 39-year-old Brazilian model could look stunning wearing anything, but this ensemble — adorned with rhinestones and paired with black sandals as well as a silver choker necklace — is too boring for someone who should be a fashion icon.
