Taco Bell Decades Menu brings back Caramel Apple Empanada, more discontinued items

Taco Bell is treating long time customers to a (Baja) blast from the past.

The chain introduced its limited-time Decades Menu bringing back familiar items from the past 60 years. A total of five beloved items will return each from its signature decade and is priced at $3 or less.

"The Decades Menu helps unite generations of fans who fondly remember these menu items, with a new era of fans who have yet to experience the delight of a savory Tostada, taste the legendary Green Sauce Burrito, or take their first bite of a Meximelt," the company said in a news release.

Among the nostalgic items are the Caramel Apple Empanada, first introduced in early 2000s and discontinued in 2019. The crispy dessert, filled with apple pieces and caramel creamy filling, returns on Nov. 21.

However, the other four items will available nationwide starting Oct. 31, including one of the chain's original offers, the Tostada.

Decades Menu items and prices

Taco Bell is bringing back the following five items each introduced in a different decade and priced at under $3.

  • '60s: Tostada priced at $2.19 and available starting Oct. 31. This item layers refried beans, red sauce, crispy lettuce and shredded cheese over a corn tostada shell.

  • 70s: Green Sauce Burrito priced at $2.49 and available starting Oct. 31. This burrito from the 1970's is filled with refried beans, onions, shredded cheese and green sauce made with green chili, peppers, tomatillos, jalapeño and spices.

  • ‘80s: Meximelt priced at $2.99 and available starting Oct. 31. This item introduced the 1980's combines pico de gallo, seasoned beef and a three cheese blend of mozzarella, cheddar and Monterey jack wrapped in a tortilla.

  • ‘90s: Gordita Supreme priced at $2.99 and available starting Oct. 31. This item from the 1990's wraps a flatbread over seasoned beef, reduced-fat sour cream, crisp lettuce, diced tomatoes and a three cheese blend of mozzarella, cheddar and Monterey jack.

  • '00s: Caramel Apple Empanada priced at $2.99 and available starting Nov. 21. Launched in 2000, the sweet treat surrounds apple pieces and a creamy caramel filling with a golden-brown crispy exterior.

Chain taste tests Chicken Street Chalupas in Minneapolis

Taco Bell will be taste testing Chicken Al Pastor Street Chalupas in Minneapolis starting on Oct. 31.

Inspired by Mexican street food, this item features al pastor chicken in a cheesy street sized quesalupa shell and topped with onion and cilantro. Two tacos are provided per order, and prices vary between $4.99 to $5.99 depending on location.

The chain began taste testing its Strawberry Passionfruit Aguas Refrescas in Charlotte, North Carolina for $3.99 on Sept. 26. The green tea drink combines strawberry passionfruit and dehydrated strawberry pieces.

The chain has also tested its Caliente Cantina Chicken Burrito in Cincinnati, Ohio for $5.99 that same day. The burrito comes with a new Caliente Sauce, a spicy condiment that combines red pepper, red jalapeno pepper and ghost chile pepper.
