Tessa Virtue is pregnant! Olympic ice dancer and NHL star Morgan Rielly are expecting their first baby: 'So happy for you!'
The 35-year-old figure skater and Maple Leafs defenceman tied the knot in 2023.
Tessa Virtue is pregnant with her first child. On Tuesday, the Canadian ice dancer took to Instagram to share photos of her growing baby bump taken during a recent vacation with her husband, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman, Morgan Rielly.
“Some snaps from my favourites folder from a few weeks back,” the 35-year-old Olympic gold medalist wrote.
The carousel of images included some photos of a picturesque beach setting and the couple relaxing before revealing a selfie of herself to announce the news. In separate photos, Rielly, 30, planted a kiss on Virtue’s cheek and the mom-to-be shared a photo that featured her pregnant belly while her husband entered the surf.
The news prompted excited messages congratulating the two athletes.
“Congratulations! You’re going to be the very best mama!” a follower wrote.
“Congratulations to you both,” another added. “So happy for you, Tessa. You deserve all the happiness”
“Beautiful! Congratulations to you and Morgan,” a follower echoed.
The happy news comes months after the couple announced that they privately tied the knot in 2023. In February, Virtue and Rielly shared photos from their wedding ceremonies with Hello! Canada. The Canadian power couple celebrated their nuptials by hosting an intimate dinner at Noce restaurant in Toronto before travelling to Italy for a romantic reception in Tuscany.
"You know when something is just so meaningful to you that you simultaneously want to just hold on to it and protect it so fiercely, and also shout it from the rooftops?” Virtue told the magazine about opting not to go public with news of her marriage right away.
The couple were introduced by mutual friends and were photographed together in January 2020 when they were photographed at an MLSE charity event. Virtue and Rielly quarantined with one another during the pandemic and relished the opportunity to lean on one another during the early days of COVID.
"We are both kind of in it together,” Rielly said in an April 2020 interview about spending time with Virtue. “We are trying to keep each other sane. I don’t want to say too much about it, but … I’m glad in a time like this that I’m not alone. We all need somebody to talk to.”
Although they are notoriously private, Virtue told Shantelle Bisson on the "Without Losing Your Cool" podcast in January 2023 about the pair's transformational relationship.
"I was very guarded for a long time, and I wouldn't give out my phone number, I wouldn't open up — I was very insular," she shared. "I think that's changed, though. I feel much more open now, and maybe that's just getting comfortable with who I am and what I want, and also, being a good judge of character helps."
