Shenae Grimes-Beech hits back at 'keyboard warriors' in tearful video: 'Words matter'

Shenae Grimes-Beech is firing back at hurtful criticism from "keyboard warriors."

Over the weekend, the "Degrassi: The Next Generation" alum shared a tearful Instagram reel addressing recent comments from online trolls who criticized her appearance. In the heartfelt video, Grimes-Beech opened up about the impact and consequences words can have on someone's mental health.

"I'm not the person that just shows up crying on social media, but these tears have to do with social media," she began, acknowledging the emotional toll of recent online harassment. "It's been a sh—-storm of a week."

The 33-year-old explained amidst the negative comments, she received a message of support from someone who acknowledged the challenges she faces behind the scenes. "It meant a lot," she said.

The "90210" actress applauded her own resilience and thick skin developed over two decades in the public eye.

"I've got a tough exterior. I've been in the public eye for two decades, I've had sh— talked about me the entire time — I've got pretty thick skin. You think I'm ugly? Whatever. I don't care," she said.

While criticism of her appearance doesn't seem to phase Grimes-Beech, she admitted she is sensitive to what others think about her character.

"I've been called a b—-h my entire life for being somebody who is outspoken and will say it like it is," Grimes-Beech shared. "I know I'm not for everybody, I'm not everybody's cup of tea. It's something I've accepted about myself, sort of — I'm trying. I'm working on it."

She ended the video with: "I just want you to know, before you type, your words matter. Your mean ones matter, for sure. But the good ones matter too."

Grimes-Beech doubled down about the weight words can have in her caption. She encouraged people to consider the intent behind their words, especially when typing behind the anonymity of screens.

"Before you start typing under this post or any other, little keyboard warriors, you do not know what somebody is experiencing behind closed doors," she wrote. The actress then added: "Mental health is an issue that is devastating society right now. Yet, when we're typing away behind the security blanket of a screen, so many people seem to have a total lack of compassion."

After unveiling a dramatic new haircut — a bob with french-cut fringe — Grimes-Beech shared a TikTok with the caption, "When people let you know you didn't 'age terribly' because of your wrinkles, it's because of your 'terrible haircut.'"

She took aim at the haters by lip-syncing to an audio clip saying, "What if, and just hear me out for a second, you shut the f—k up."

This wasn't the first time that the Canadian actress has responded to criticism about her aging. On Aug. 31, she took to Instagram with a video responding to the initial comments that she has "aged terribly."

"Thing is, I'm just aging. I'm nearly 34 years old with two kids, what the hell do you expect?!" she penned in the caption.
