School district has new dress code to keep students from vaping: 'Sun's Up; Guns Up'
A school district in Texas is addressing the increased rates of vaping with a new dress code.
The new policy put in place by the Channing Independent School District makes students roll up their sleeves when wearing sweatshirts or hoodies so that teachers can see their forearms. And it’s meant as a crackdown on e-cigarettes, which have been snuck into school hallways and classrooms by students who hide vapes in their hands before sliding them down their sweatshirt sleeves.
Channing ISD Superintendent Robert McLain didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment, but told KXAN that the rule seemed like a good solution that’s a compromise on sweatshirt-wearing.
“We talked about banning hoodies, but we know some of our kids are cold-natured, and some have preferences that they want to keep the hoodies,” McLain explained to the local Texas outlet. “So we felt like this was something that would help us be preventative, but yet allow them to keep their hoodies.”
According to the 2018-2019 Channing Student Code of Conduct, tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and any parts to them, are already listed as prohibited items. The dress code is an extra precaution.
